  • Turbinocarpus alansoi with Stereos

In a recent topic about a cactus in flower, I said that most of the diurnal ones opened only during the early afternoon on a very warm day (in the greenhouse). This species nearly caught me out. I knew it was going to flower that day and was going to take a look at 1pm (12am GMT). Fortunately I looked at about noon, to find it wide open. By 1.15 it was closed. The same happened on the following day so it seems normal!

These are all sunlit shots. The single frames have had normal cropping: the stereos are uncropped.

    Olympus EM-1*, f11 1/100 or 1/125 sec, hand-held. * Plus Olympus 4/3 x2 TC for the second image.

I seem to have difficulty with the cross-eyed method. My solution is to copy and then swap the images left-right. If I then relax my eyes, I can see a stereo image between the two. Perhaps it's to do with age, since I used to be able to do cross-eyes.

When I look at them the original way round, the flower seems to lie in a tunnel down into the gravel. The curious thing is that the transition seems very abrupt with no intermediate distances appearing.
