Re: Lens Hoods - Just in case you need to know.

I always use a lens hood.

I'm often amused by photographers with expensive kit, who take photo's with the lens hood in the parked/reversed position! I've even seen this with professionals on Countryfile. They may only be simulating taking a photo, but they should still do it properly.

They offer a lot of physical protection too. I still have an old rubber collapsible one, that I expect would disintegrate if I tried to use it.

Re: Lens Hoods - Just in case you need to know.

I've made my own extension hoods for telephotos in the past for the extra shading.

Using a lot of legacy primes on my 4/3 bodies I use an appropriate hood for the angle of view. For example I use hoods for 50 mm lenses on my 24 and 28 mm lenses and a 100 mm hood on my 50 mm.

Re: Lens Hoods - Just in case you need to know.

I use a hood when the front element of a lens is not deeply recessed.

The article misses out the prime function of a hood on a fast telephoto lens. It is to give mechanical protection.

Hoods can be more important for some, flare-prone, legacy lenses.
