Re: Weed or Wildflower? - Kelly Country

If it is a weed then it is a pretty one, Lyn.

And if we are all equal in the eyes of God, then why should flowers be stigmatised by being dubbed a weed?

I don't know what Ross thinks, but the leaves look suspiciously like one of the Oxalis family to me. There are over 800 types, and I may be well off the mark here - it still could be a wildflower - but my vote is for a weed.
By George, I think you're right! Thanks Lyn. I needed that big start & after that, searching images in google can bring up quick results.

Although Australia has some native species & there are edible ones too (amonst the world wide species), this one looks like one of the weed species as identified in WA.

Oxalis glabra - Fingerleaf - is a small erect plant to 15cm high. One or two five petaled pinkish purple flowers with yellow throats are produced on thin upright stems. Short, narrow, green to reddish leaves occur in clusters along the stem length. The small bulbs have a brown papery cover.

O. glabra is widespread in disturbed woodlands around the Perth metropolitan area. The weed is common on heavy soils from Perth to York and has a scattered distribution in the lower south-west.

OMG! ... between the pair of you I have not only a couple of green fingers but also two musos on my patch! Your scholarship is impressive

But thanks to you both for the ID on the Oxalis g-gg-g-glabria ... ... well I can barely pronounce these Latin nouns, let alone remember them!

I have my science teaching wife to thank as she majored in botany with zoology (with the reference books) & she got me started. Eucalypts were my passion & then in the nineties they go & spoil it by changing a number to Corymbia instead. E.g. Eucalyptus Ficifolia (WA red flowering gum) became Corymbia Ficifolia. Just doesn't have the same ring to it.

BTW, stop the stuttering & get it right & then I might get it right. On closer investigation, the O. glabra does not have the right leaf (that's why it's called a finger leaf ), so back to the drawing board for me.

I'll keep looking.

Keep at it Ross - I will try more ID over the weekend - time permitting.

I hope I haven't sent you on a wild goose chase - ask any gardener what they think of Oxalis - and stand back!

It still may be a Native Plant.

If they were rare as orchids, ignited the passion of beautiful women, worth lots of money and grew in profusion on your lawn, then you would poison the grass and nurture the Oxalis.
