Hi, I'm Clair, and I've been a photographer for...

Hi Guys,

I've been on here for a couple of months or so, but I don't think I've ever introduced myself. So yeah, I'm Clair, I'm 21, and I've been taking gig photos properly for just under a year now.

My photos are here, if you want to have a nosey or whatever - http://flickr.com/photos/cmcallisterphotography

So yeah, nice to meet everyone!

Clair

Welcome, Clair. I haven't been on here that long myself but I'm sure you'll find, as I did, that it's a really helpful and friendly group.

Hi Claire.

I enjoyed looking at your shots on flickr; some exciting images... may be you could enter some in the Open Challenge?

Regards

Hi Clair,

I've looked at some of your pictures in another thread recently and I was impressed. I've just looked at some more on your flickr and yes, you've definitely got a talent for this type of photography.

What's really important is that you've got great enthusiasm for your subject and this shines through - not only in your excellent photographs but in your excellent gig write-ups too!

I think I know what you'd like to do for a career. Good luck, I look forward to seeing your progress.

Nice gig images. Do you get a pass or something? I've fancied trying to blag something from our local venue but don't know how to go about it.

The first thing to do is to make sure you can get your stuff published - in a local paper, music mag, website, or whatever. Then just search for contacts, myspace is the best, as most bands, especially the lesser known ones, will have email addresses and names for their management and press associates.

Just email/ring (though putting it in writing is better) whoever it is and tell them you're requesting a pass for your chosen publication(s) - the more there is, the better! And always send on loads of examples of your work. Ask for a plus one also, and get a reviewer on board with you, or if that's not possible, always try to accompany your images with some sort of write-up. Most press people will include a plus one as standard, so if you're doing everything you get to bring a friend woohoo! (Always check this though - I haven't been, and have been buying tickets for mates when they could just get in free! :P) Try and get everything published and all scans sent back to them asap - the more reliable you are the easier it'll be to get what you want next time.

And allllllways ask for a roster if it's a PR company you're dealing with - you may find they have a lot of other excellent bands, who may happen to be on tour at that particular time. I have just started dealing with one lately, and in around a month I have covered 3 pretty big gigs for them, and may have a huge date to cover in March as well.

And don't be afraid to pester people - all they can do is say no!

Hope that helps, well, at least a wee bit!

Clair

Hi Clair,

Welcome and Great images.

What would be our normal camera and equipment for your gig shots?

Hi Paul!

Thank you very much for your comments! :-)

I used to use an e410 with a 14-45 kit lens, but now use an e620 with an 18-50 sigma f/2.8, and together they are awesome, I love them! I rarely use flash, but if I reeeeally have to, I have an fl-36 olympus flashgun.

Though if I haven't got a press pass and have to smuggle in the ol' DSLR, I stick the 40-150 kit lens on.

Clair
