Spotted Flycatcher

The garden SFs are having a break between broods, they seem quite relaxed.

With the EM1.2 and updated F'wares all round.

That image is spot-on! I haven't seen a SF for very many years.

Cracking shots of one of my favourite birds Andrew. I have turned a strange shade of green.

Thanks Ron, appreciate that.

Perhaps you need your white balance adjusting!

Very clean image as always. What were your settings if you don't mind telling?

Thanks Mark.

Very happy to share information with you Mark!

For the first shot I was balanced on a wobbly old step ladder griping onto a tree branch for stability so had to hold the EM1.2 and 300 f4 plus teleconverter with one hand. This allowed me to get closer to the same level as the bird rather than looking up at it as in the second shot taken from the ground. THIS IS NOT A RECOMMENDATION!

So the camera settings I use help take account of the above situation but you do end up with a lot of pictures, usually 1 of which is in focus, sharp, and the bird is somewhere in the frame. But you only need one good one as they say.

Iso 200, C-AF sequential low 10fps electronic shutter (allows for AF between shots), single small AF focus point, I try to use the lens at its highest resolving power, which is f8 with the converter, and hope the shutter speed is at least 1/60th. If not then I boost the iso but only to a max of 640.

Get the bird framed up and press and hold the button for a few seconds. The stabilizer should take account of the lens wobble and most birds stay perfectly still for a moment or 2 between movements. You just pick the frame that appears when all the stars align.
