Samsung to quit UK digital camera market

I know it's not Olympus news but it's interesting and relevant. Samsung was the first to follow the example set by Panasonic and Olympus with their Micro Four Thirds mirrorless system cameras, introducing the Samsung NX system. It's fair to say that NX never really gathered enough momentum and as a journalist covering the market I have to say that at times I wondered if Samsung UK was trying hard enough to sell the NX system. Well, now they have given up - only in the UK for now, but surely other countries will follow and the news will inevitably cast doubt on the long term future of the NX system.

Re: Samsung to quit UK digital camera market

That's quite a significant piece of news. An organisation the size of Sansung to be giving up so quickly on what must have been a significant investment is quite a vole face! I personally never really liked the feel of their cameras, but they did seem to get decent reviews. Not good news for anyone who bought into the system.

Re: Samsung to quit UK digital camera market

They've pulled out of Germany too apparently.
Bit of a strange one given the rave reviews the NX1 has had, after all that investment too.
I handled and had a play with an NX1 a few weeks back in JL and very nice it was too I have to say.

It is a shame they are seemingly giving up but as great as that NX1 was it may not have been realised in sales though. Marketing is a very important component in sales & unfortunately that would have to have been pretty strong to convince users to try something & rely on a system different from the established camera makers. It's also one less competitor in the market to drive the others to strive for greater innovation etc.

Re: Samsung to quit UK digital camera market

Had Smasung come along with a micro 4/3 camera and lenses I suspect they'd still be in the market, but frankly mirrorless system cameras of other than m4/3 fit have to have an USP and given the wide choice of m4/3 cameras and lenses. NX, while good, was not 'better enough' to survive. We now see Canon and Nikon venturing into mirrorless with yet another standard, but certainly with Canon, some of their mainstream DSLR lenses can be used on their mirrorless cameras.

Re: Samsung to quit UK digital camera market

If the NX failure was due to lack of marketing, it would be ironic considering their ginormous marketing budget for phones. I suspect it's as much to do with market inertia and snobbery with higher end cameras.

I think your comment is pretty much spot on.
Marketing for NX1 and NX500 didn't reflect the amount of effort that was put into development.
Smart phones sell in vast numbers, specialist cameras not so much.

We've got TV ads for a Sony phone tied to the new James Bond film and another for Samsung smartphones tied to the new Star Wars film. You wouldn't believe some of the products being tied to the upcoming Star Wars film, everything from fast food to makeup.

I think I read somewhere that the latest Bond film has 17 product placements. These days life is just one big Sell.

Probably, there's at least two other ads on TV over here tied in with the new Bond. We're so sick of all the Star Wars tie ins we're going to boycott anything tied in with the franchise.

Re: Samsung to quit UK digital camera market

Certainly came as a surprise to me. To put things into perspective... Samsung makes the best APS-C format digital camera, ever, bar none, and then quits the market! NX might not have had much momentum, but Samsung looked like they were taking a very long term approach.
