Northern Lights Iceland

Just as I and the camera saw it, pitch black with just the Northern Lights lighting the sky. It was minus 18C on a mountain road outside Reykjavik - hope the camera and lens survived! Haven't dared look yet! Everyone should have the opportunity to witness this amazing experience, I am so very lucky!

Yes, you are lucky, but I believe that in photography you make your own luck. You stacked the odds in your favour just by making the effort to be there, in pretty difficult and inhospitable conditions. Your reward? A remarkable and beautiful image of a facinating natutal phenomenon that many of us would have given our E3 to have seen!

Re: Northern Lights Iceland

I would love to see the Northern Lights some day and shoot some photo's of it. Well done, and do not worry about the low temperature and your equipment. Search on DPR for Garry Frankel he lives in Canada (Winnipeg) and shoots all Olympus E- models in much lower temperatures successfully.

Re: Northern Lights Iceland

Thanks Guys, my E520 is made of stout stuff! Us Brits see a bit of snow and the whole country grinds to a halt so -18C and the coating of ice over the whole camera and lens just unnerved me a little - But I have dusted it off for my daughters dance competition tomorrow and its working just fine, incidently I have to say the Uniross oly equivalent battery lasted amazingly well, over an hour of shooting and writing to the card and still over half power!
Thanks for your comments. Jane

Re: Northern Lights Iceland

The Northern Lights have been see as far South as Folkstone, but sunspot activity and consequently aurora displays is currently rather low.

Here's a good site for aurora information:

http://www.dcs.lancs.ac.uk/iono/aurorawatch/

You can also subscribe (for free), so you get automatic email notification when aurora are likely.

Re: Northern Lights Iceland

Due to the vagaries of aurora I find http://www.spaceweather.com/ to be useful...
With the Sun being a little inactive at the moment aurora appear to be less common at lower latitudes but here is my Shetland Gallery
from a while back.
If you want to see 'em then just look at SpaceWeather and you will see that presently Iceland, Alaska and northern Norway are your best bets
