Olympus developing a new 500mm lens?

They're probably talking about the already-announced 150-400 f4.5 which goes to 500mm with its built-in 1.25 TC.

You could be right. It could also be a 500 prime F/4 or F/4.5 as F/5.6 is already occupied. The article does not mention any zoom capabilities.

As I read it it would be a new product. It says that it would be 2000mm in FF with the 2.0 teleconverter. at least that is what I got from the post. IBWB

50% longer than the 300mm f4 (and twice as heavy?), but would fit in my bag (which will probably be worn out by the time it's available).

My Tamron Adaptall-2 200-500mm is 370mm.

My Panasonic 100 - 400mm Leica is 260mm at 400mm.

I just wish that Olympus would give us the 100-400 (or thereabouts) alternative to the Panny version which was mentioned in their lens map (No, I don't mean the 150-400 Pro) instead of seemingly concentrating on high level lenses which the average man in the street would not buy because of the size/weight and cost.

By the time the Olympus 150-400 Pro arrives, I very much doubt if I will have the strength to lift it, let alone the funds to purchase it

Just how long do Olympus need to get a lens on the market? The link in post #6 above is to a patent filed for a 500mm lens in 2013, six years ago, and they've only just got around to announcing it's now under development.

Patent and development are different things. Now that they have highly capable, performing and well received bodies it makes sense to invest into development and production line for high end telephoto lenses.

I agree with Keith it is about time Olympus built a 100-400 that will rival the Panasonic 100-400 f4-6.3 in focal length with the Olympus quality, they are way to slow with this one.


They should have had a 100-400 on the market years ago in my opinion without all the issues etc of the Panasonic 100-400 f4-f6.3 that is my reason for never buying that one but one produced by Olympus I would have in a heartbeat for airshows etc.


I won't be holding my breath for the Olympus 100-400 :-(
