Critique or pistols at dawn - choose your weapon!

This forum is rightly acknowledged as being one of the friendliest around, so much so it is taken for granted that we can critique each other's pictures in a constructive and friendly manner, knowing that our opinions will be well received and appreciated.

Heres an example of when it all goes wrong on a much larger forum......

http://www.talkphotography.co.uk/for...d.php?t=226849

I could hardly believe what I was reading as I watched this unfold!

comments like that scare people off from posting pictures, constructive comments would have been more helpful.

Re: Critique or pistols at dawn - choose your weapon!

... and is exactly the reason I no longer post on TalkPhotography. I had my head bitten off by a pro tog after I challenged his self imposed 'right' to fix the work of amateur wedding togs, and was subsequently scourned by a moderator for so doing. That was over a year ago.

The site does have decent members, but is waaaaay cliquey and so full of anti Oly users it's unreal and when this is challenged, the mods turn on their... "oh come on now, it's only a laugh isn't it, there's no bitterness here" talk. If it looks like an elephant, and if it sounds like an elephant, and if it smells like an elephant... chances are, it is an elephant.

Give me eGroup any day of the week.

I don't post pictures there, or take the site too seriously, but I do drop in from time to time for a little light entertainment. I think the mods have quite a hard job because it is such an active site and the aggressive attitude of many members is unbelievable. It seems that threads are cleaned up or locked and posts deleted on almost a daily basis.

Re: Critique or pistols at dawn - choose your weapon!

A good reminder of the need to keep what we've got.

And key to that is maintaining two aspects of our own behavior.

1) To word criticism/comments in the way we would want to receive them.

2) To give the advantage of the doubt when we very occaisionally get replies that rankle; after all we can only read the words, not see the true intent. And we all occaisionally phrase things which can be taken the wrong way.

It is after all just a forum, there is no 'prize' (other than the appreciation of our peers). No one has to be right.

Re: Critique or pistols at dawn - choose your weapon!

Yes, this is the forum for me: Quite civilised innit?

(I just wasted ten minutes reading an angry thread on the DPreview Oly forum. Why are they so angry all the time? Is because DRP is black rather than our calming greyish colour? Odd behaviour)

PS. Sun shining. Off out with my camera to take pictures, rather than argue on the web

Course it civilised! don't we all Olympus? A lot of these people with canikons are a pain in the butt, all that concerns them is bragging about their new lenses etc.

Re: Critique or pistols at dawn - choose your weapon!

Had a look at it, scary.
Looking at the timing of the entries there was a lot of late night key bashing and 'and another thing' stuff.

If that is anything remotely usual, I couldn't see a place there for Snaarman's or Peter Temple-Fry's lyrical strolls.

I try to wait and think out what I am going to say. (It may not look like it.)

Re: Critique or pistols at dawn - choose your weapon!

I posted up some photos on talkphotography that I took of Herne Bay Pier.

http://www.talkphotography.co.uk/for...91#post3603491

I got an email alert saying that MusicMan had commented... I thought fair enough, John's not on a ban for a change

Then I looked at the comment... I thought crikey, John's a bit more feisty and abrupt on TP than he is on here

Turns out it is not THEmusicman... that would explain it. I have never met this other guy and I didn't tag saying that I was looking for critique. You need to be pretty thick skinned to post on TP. Of course, if you post you should be prepared to accept that not everyone will like what you have done but it does seem as though there is very little etiquette applied on web forums (present company excepted). Then again, maybe I should regard this as a close shave... I have seen others really savaged, I've merely had a bit of a cuffing.

Re: Critique or pistols at dawn - choose your weapon!

Haha David...

Nope, I am not banned from TP, though I haven't visited the site for some time - but I inadvertently clicked on the link in the email I received from here that contained the link to TP so I have visited today!!

I've not visited since I got a rather unpleasant email from the owner of the site who until then, I thought I got along with rather well. Ho hum.

I posted this one there, thought it was quite good until they said it was a bit soft - maybe it is but still quite good for a novice!
