Winter Bittern

On a recent visit to Minsmere, I had my closest encounter with a Bittern to date.

It was a cold but bright day and the bird knew exactly where to catch the sun, what a privilege to see the bird at such close quarters.

Re: Winter Bittern

It is good to see that the Minsmere Bitterns are still performing well for the eager punters. Great shots Dave.

I like your shots of the 'showy' Water Rail too. Where were they taken?

Thanks Ron.

The Bitterns have shown very well at Minsmere this year however, this one came closest to us so far.

The Water Rail shots were taken in North Yorkshire on Sunday last, a lovely area.

I've added a few more images to the Water Rail folder today.

Re: Winter Bittern

Second one for me, a more interesting pose than the normal Bittern pose.

Re: Winter Bittern

Great shots. We went to a workshop at Slimbridge yesterday about the Heritage Lottery Fund and their development plans. Some very interesting views and discussions, including one on the suitability of a bittern in the Living Theatre Aviary.

Thanks David.

I like the second shot also, it's one of a series of the bird preening which was great to see.

Thanks Amanda,

I'm not sure that keeping a bittern in an aviary would be a good thing however,
those at Slimbridge are more knowledgable than I about this.
