Re: Price of new 25mm f1.8 standard lens

A good deal cheaper over there, $399. Which I calculate as extra 50%, not all of which can be tax differences.

indeed - never seen a range of lenses that has the variation up and down between the two markets!

Re: Price of new 25mm f1.8 standard lens

I have the PL25, and at the time of purchase ( two years ago) it was a kings ransom to me. Today (assuming it performs as well as the 45mm) I would buy the Oly 25 because it is comparatively cheaper, faster AF and lighter. I don't think I would miss the f1.4 speed in most situations.

I may yet sell the PL25 if the Oly is all I hope it will be. By then I expect the price will have come down, fingers crossed.

Best wishes

Re: Price of new 25mm f1.8 standard lens

Because it comes with a hood. I to am not happy about the price. But it is incredibly sharp from what I have seen, (McGillicuddy's photos), not sharp enough and priced where I would replace my Sigma 30mm though.

Re: Price of new 25mm f1.8 standard lens

I think the 50mm standard lenses were cheap in the 70s and 80s because they sold in huge numbers - nowadays the great majority of people go for zooms as their "standard lens" so primes cost more. Even so, this one seems rather expensive.

Re: Price of new 25mm f1.8 standard lens

The new 50mm does not interest me, I have to admit I rarely used the std 50mm in my 35mm film days and always favoured a 35mm and that is probably the reason I brought the 17mm f1.8.

Re: Price of new 25mm f1.8 standard lens

In my 35mm days my standards were 24mm and 600mm. My Vivitar 35mm f/1.9 from the 70's makes a nice 'standard' for me these days.

Re: Price of new 25mm f1.8 standard lens

I'm led to believe that the design is heavily based on the 45. Even more of a reason to think the UK price is just crazy. It should be £299 tops, and maybe more like £270.

Re: Price of new 25mm f1.8 standard lens

If nobody buys it, the price will come down. But Olympus has historically had very significant differential regional pricing. Everything else considered, like most suppliers, they pitch their prices at what they think the market will bear. Personally I think they've got this one wrong in the UK and I'm out.

Re: Price of new 25mm f1.8 standard lens

I wonder if it will be generally available at the Photography Show in a couple of weeks..............at a Show Special price? It would have to be a couple of hundred less than the RRP to interest me though.

Re: Price of new 25mm f1.8 standard lens

I know this is the "price" thread, but I have a question.
the PanaLeica 25mm : I always heard the AF was really fast on that, now I see comments about it not being fast.
Sure, the goalposts have changed but what's the story?
I have a sigma 30mm here with slightly faster AF than the Olympus 45mm, both are fast.
Both my 17mmF2.8 and Lumix 20mm are slow-AF, but fine for me.
So how fast does the PL 25mmF1.4 focus?

Well, I could tell you better if it was in my hands just now, but Ian currently has it for testing ....

But, from memory it's quite quick, about as fast as the 45mm or 75mm. Perhaps not quite as fast as my very short handling of the new Oly 25mm.

Re: Price of new 25mm f1.8 standard lens

My experience of the PL25 1:4 is that it is fairly brisk on OMD em5, the 45mm 1:8 blows it away for focus as does the 17mm 1.8. Having said this it is not so slow you would miss a shot.

I like the prospect of the size and weight of the Oly 25m1:8, the PL 25 looks big and bulky by comparison, and while subjective it's a bit on the ugly looking to my eye, but forgivable given its performance and while in the absence of other m4/3 25mm, I might sell my PL and buy the Oly.

Best wishes
