Re: E-System Bargains

Yes very happy camper even though the weather wasn't too bad in the end today but we had to go shoppin so I still couldn't get out in the Derbyshire countryside . You are right about it's sharpness too Paul very impressive. Just thought I'd keep your thread on top of the list. If you don't sell the 50mm I'll buy it as a Christmas present. Should just about be able to justify buying another lens to the wife by then.

Re: E-System Bargains

How does the ZD 50mm f2 Macro lens compare with the 35mm f3.5 macro lens? Is 50mm better than 35mm? The enlargement ratios are different, 50mm = 1:2 30mm = 1:1.

The 50mm allows you to be a little further away at the same enlargement ratio. Although the 35mm does a true 1:1 at that enlargement you will be about one inch away from your subject which throws up other problems like photographing skittish insects and casting a shadow on your subject.

I had both the the 35mm and 50mm macro's and although the 35mm is a good lens it got little use and my 50mm Macro was my go to lens for a wide range of subjects from macro to portraits for various reasons.

1- It is razor sharp and had a wide f2 aperture and it is also sharp wide open.

2- The longer focal length makes it perfect for portrait and the wider aperture allows you to throw the background out of focus easier for portraits (and Macro's if needed).

My 50mm Macro has been used for most subjects.

Insects even though I am not into them much.

Flora

Here I used f2.8 to throw the background out of focus.

And in these two that are closer up I used f2.8 to get a shallow DOF to get a abstract type floral image.

It is also a great lens for portrait.

In the studio at f4.5

Outside at f2.8 to throw the wall which was only a few feet behind her out of focus.

And at f2 to just have the eyes in sharp focus.

Apart from the first one these would have been difficult to do with the 35mm.

Quality comes at a price, I hope this answers your questions.

Well Paul if those shots don't sell your 50mm nothing will. They are stunning. If only you could wait until Christmas to sell I'd definitely buy it then.

Thank you Peter.

I'll probably move it to a new thread on its own later on now most of it is sold.

But I'm not desperate to sell it and I'm certainly not going to drop the price for a lens that is in very good condition and costs 575 new, so it may still be there for you come Xmas if you still want it.

No comparison!

The 50mm is an outstanding lens. When dpreview reviewed it, they said:

"Certainly in terms of the studio results, it's the nearest we've yet found to a technically perfect lens"

Full review here:

Steve Wrotniak also raved about the 50mm:
