But oddly, this site (which is usually good) suggests it's a discontinued model: http://www.four-thirds.org/en/microf....html#c=FINISH
I can't see that suggestion.

If you click on the tab labelled "Products of Olympus" (within the "standard zoom" heading) it lists 5 current lenses (12-40 f2.8 Pro, 12-100 f4 Pro, 14-42 EZ, 14-42 II R & 14-150 II). If you click on the tab labelled "Discontinued models" it shows 7 lenses; 3 Panasonics and 4 Olys, the Olys being 12-50, 14-42, 14-42 II and 14-150.

Re: FW Update 12-50mm lens to Version 1.4

Strangely this is one of only two Oly lenses which has electronic zoom. Even Pro lenses don't have it.

electronic zoom can be controlled from OIShare which can be useful for discreet photography of wildlife. (You leave camera set up on a tripod and perhaps covered with rainproof camouflage hood, with a full battery, in silent shutter mode, pointing at where creatures visit; e.g. a nest hole, favourite perch or bird table. You monitor the scene from OIShare on a phone/tablet and then have the facility to focus, set aperture and shutter speed and power zoom, and take a photo).

It would be really nice if something like the 40-150 Pro or the Pany 100-400 had E-zoom. 12-50 would not be very adequate unless you can get camera very close to the action.

The 12-50 lens was designed to be an 'allrounder' where the electronic zoom feature allowed for fast or slow control, being ideal for video. The other added feature of course was macro. Get to the Pro lenses & then they are less at being 'the jack of all trades' & more at specialising in quality stills. They do video, but not so ideal with zooming (for video) though.

Apart from its long length I actually quite like this lens. It also has a programmable function button too, and is weathersealed. Tend to use it with my Pen F.
