Birds of Santon Downham

Santon Downham, near Thetford, is a magical place. And it has some good birds at times:

Re: Birds of Santon Downham

Great shots of some splendid birds Andy. I believe Santon Downham is the place for Lesser Spotted Woodpeckers in this part of the country, although I have never been there.

Re: Birds of Santon Downham

Thanks Ron. For the Lesser Spotted Woodpecker site I'm told that you follow the Little Ouse river about 3/4 mile West from Santon Downham and then you'll see a clearing in the trees on the footpath side and they nest in the remaining trees in that area. Probably easiest to see when they are excavating the nest hole. I'm told that they are easier (not easy!) to see in the mornings. You'll see signs posted when you are near to the area warning about not causing disturbance in the breeding season.

Re: Birds of Santon Downham

Lovely pics and a lovely place to visit, west of my county but might be worth a trip someday. I had 3 Bramblings feeding in my garden late last week.

Re: Birds of Santon Downham

Nice. I must admit I am envious about the Rail, a shy species that is hard to get close of and get a clear view of.
