Does picture mode 3 (Vivid) improve AF?

I read here http://www.ayton.id.au/wiki/doku.php...:olympusem5_af and elsewhere on his wiki that - even if you shoot in RAW - setting a picture mode of Vivid improves the speed and accuracy of autofocus, because the focus system is based on an internal JPG representation of the image. can this be true? Is the difference noticeable?

(I hardly ever use JPGs out of the camera so the effect on those is not important)

Interesting comment. I've no idea if it has any effect to be honest but shooting raw+jpg I do always have vivid mode set for my jpgs. Just because that's how I like them. It gives me a nice bright image to aim at when raw processing.

I do exactly the same Phil, but often don't bother processing the raw because the JPEG is good enough.

I canít see how an image that has yet to be taken and processed to a jpg can have any influence on the AF system.

I think the claim is that the system continuously converts what can be seen through the lens into jpg format so as to display it in the viewfinder or rear screen.

Years ago I discovered that there are three different images produced:

The ORF, a jpg and one that is embedded in the ORF/jpg that is optimised for the EVF/Screen.

I will look back and see if I can find the post where this was discussed.

I still think the CDAF system is completely independent of the image processing engine. Also the PDAF works both independently and with the CDAF to determine a fix.

With that theory, then increasing the contrast may improve focus capture too.
