Smile OMD E-M1 Mark 2 First Impressions

Went to London (Park Cameras) and thanks to Dave, had a good hands on.

The extra little increase in size, for me, makes it even better to hold. The small increased weight is hardly noticeable. The EVF is excellent and very fast.

But you will have already read all the other reviews and will be waiting for Ian to give the definitive review

It's everything I could ever want and a lot more. The E-M1 is very good, but the Mark 2 really is exceptional.

In the hands of many of the people on this forum, the quality of the images will only be limited by their basic photographic skills and imagination.

Thanks Graham,
Your report is very encouraging. Just as well as I have already pre ordered the mark2.

I think I'm going to hate hearing just how good this camera is, because I know I can't afford it!

I was also there today and was able to have a look at it. Impressed with the responsiveness of the controls. Viewfinder blackout seemed to be minimal and I liked the slightly increased size too. C-AF seemed good in the shop, but I'm looking forward to testing it for real.

Thanks for the impressions Graham. You are confirming my suspicions I do really need one. Unfortunately I'm not the one that needs convincing
Glad to see the guys here understood the intent behind your final comment. Shame about the FB response.

It's FaceBook, what can you expect...

I see a lot of pictures, at camera clubs & on line, that exhibit a basic lack of skills and still more that exhibit post processing failures.

I've had a few approach me with high value kit, asking what they are doing wrong, and it's almost always a case of poor composition and attention to distractions.

The cameras of today and particularly the new Mark 2 have so much capability for creativity, that our own imagination and the inspiration we get from others, will lead to improvements in all of our images.

Re: OMD E-M1 Mark 2 First Impressions

I don't want one (too big for me) but its nice to see what will trickle down (to the E-M5 perhaps).

Re: OMD E-M1 Mark 2 First Impressions

I'm planning to go to the LCE Leamington hands-on day this coming Thurs. I'm looking forward to giving it a try - I hope I can take a bit of time and use my own SD card to allow back-to-back tests with the E-M1.

However, I don't see me buying it - at least not just yet. I'm still finding the flip screen on the E-M5ii that I'm trialling at the moment to be not at all to my taste and the Hi Res mode is disappointing for a number of reasons (not least that leaf movement makes it a non-starter for landscape shooting). Given that all indications are that IQ improvements over the older cameras are tiny, I don't see the need. Maybe when we can see what raws look like with ACR/LR there might be a different view, but right now, I think "I'm out".

OTOH - I spotted this, which seems to indicate that artefacts from motion during Hi-Res mode are handled much better than with the E-M5ii:

Generally all good then but a shame about the red swatch performance. It will be interesting to see how this shows up in real world shooting.

Hi Phil, shooting RAW would fix that little problem
Jpeg reds have tended to be a little challenging for Oly and certainly CaptureOne (my converter of choice) does a very nice natural job with them.

Re: OMD E-M1 Mark 2 First Impressions

There are a number of threads around the web now looking at raw comparisons of those IR samples. Rawtherepee apparently supports the new raw format if you want to play yourself (or Oly viewer 3 ; if you have the time!). Seems the red swatch is handled much better in the raws but the improvements over the E-M1 and Pen F are pretty marginal. Improvements for sure, but only you can decide if it's 1850 worth of improvement.
