Unhappy Family Crisis

Been watching these swans all summer. They had two signets and guarded their section of the harbour with great vigour.

I do not know what caused it but the female swan drove the male from the family group.

The signets thought this was a good idea and joined in.

I think this led to a decree nisa

Unhappy Re: Family Crisis

Checked over the last couple of days and sure enough, only the female and two signets.

I always thought that Swans mate for life - I wonder what he did to deserve that sort of treatment.

Re: Family Crisis

Hi Peter

This confused me as I had the same assumption as you. Looking at Wikiepedia it states "Swans usually mate for life, though "divorce" does sometimes occur, particularly following nesting failure. The number of eggs in each clutch is between 38."

Maybe with only 2 sucessful offspring she decided he wasn't up to it ?

Regards
Andy

Re: Family Crisis

Well you know, Christmas is a stressful time.

Worse for Turkeys and Geese though which just goes to show that when you think you're having a rough time remember there's always someone worse off.
