The biggest working steam engine in britain

Had a very enjoyable trip round the Kelham Island Museum in Sheffield yesterday and saw this. It's the River Don Engine weighing in at 400 tons and 12,000 horsepower. It was used to power a rolling mill so had to work both forwards and backwards. It was a very impressive sight when they fired it up (1:00 everyday but only for two minutes running time). As a guide to it's size those hand rails were about 4 feet high.

This is a 3 image stitch of jpgs. I preferred it to the single shot raw edit even though there are a few stitching errors.

That is a monster. What do they run it on, steam or compressed air?

Re: The biggest working steam engine in britain

It was definitely steam Andrew and they spun it up to full speed very briefly though. A lot of mass moving pretty rapidly.

Here it is in steam. Lovely sounds you could feel through the floor and lovely smell too.

Oh yes why didn't I think of that Dave
I'll have to look at a few other shots to see what I got that's worthy.

Fabulous machine, fabulous image Phill, I don't see any stitching errors and I'm inclined not to look for any. Love the way you used a slow shutter to show the spinning of the wheel.

Re: The biggest working steam engine in britain

Thanks Mark. It was just a bit on the bottom hand rail. It was a difficult job as it was actually kinked not straight.

Re: The biggest working steam engine in britain

Now that you mention it I see it. But it may well have been explained away by some big fat clumsy oaf having leant against it!

Hard to imagine a big fat clumsy body beneath those aqualine features, Phill. You're just being gracious I'm sure !

Re: The biggest working steam engine in britain

Certainly worth seeing if you're ever in Sheffield! It does run on steam, the two minutes running time is all the boiler can manage before it runs out of steam - literally. When it was working originally there was a bank of ten Lancashire boilers feeding it!

There's lots more interesting stuff at that museum too; more information here.
