Unknown - Small Duck? -Identification Help Please

Swindon - old canal E-3 Sigma 135-400.

Small (about half the size of a coot) small "duck".

Anyone help with the identity - I hope it's not too obvious.

Nick

Hi Nick, I'll stand to be corrected, but I think it's a Little Grebe,
Tachybaptus ruficollis, far better than my attempt at one a while ago in the distance at the Attenborough reserve

I agree with Bill and Andy. Little Grebe.

Nice shots Nick. According to my Bird Guide they are shy and often stay within reeds for long periods. Great that you managed to catch them in the open.

Wehey Nick, these are certainly keepers for the collection. Nicely spotted and captured.

Thank-you Andy, Bill, Peter

Can't take any great credit for the photos - they were just swimming about in the shallows by the opposite bank.

Pretty sure I haven't seen them there before, the canal is a fairly regular walk of mine. Still nice to add another bird to my knowledge.

Thank you John

Another success for the 'if you stand still and look' school of photography.

Agreed Nick. My dog is getting better now, when he sees me raising the camera he usually just lays down. Not sure if its down to boredom though. The only thing he chases are seagulls. He hates them because they take off as he approaches and land again only feet away. I am sure they are playing with him.

Oh well done!

Whenever I see these little chaps they always dive and reappear somewhere yards and yards away.

Thank you Ellie

As I said they were just there, yes they did regularly dive, now I want to get a 'good' photo to show them off.

When I used to take a children's natural history group to a lake and there were waterfowl, I said to them to hold their breath as soon as one dived and they could breathe again when the bird surfaced. They could never hold their breath for as long as a grebe!
