AC-5 power supply for HLD-9 grip

Does anyone use one of these?

The Olympus product seems very expensive for a 9v 5A power unit. Has anyone used any other product successfully. I note that Ex-Pro do supplies of similar specification for Nikon cameras and wonder if any of these might be suitable.

Re: AC-5 power supply for HLD-9 grip

NCheapest I've found is 125 https://www.bristolcameras.co.uk/p-o...-for-hld-9.htm , approx.the cost of 2x 1720 mAh BLH-1 batteries https://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B01M4Q6P...v_ov_lig_dp_it

The reason I've been looking at them is that I've got a 27,000 mAh https://www.amazon.co.uk/Portable-RA...54708807&psc=1 (which I got brand new for just over 40) which is over 15x the mAh of the camera batteries, and possibly useful for when camping with no electrical hook up.

Re: AC-5 power supply for HLD-9 grip

The Olympus AC-5 adaptor supplies 9V at 5A, that's 45W, I hardly think that the OM-D E-M1 Mark II uses anywhere near that power, even at maximum load. I don't have a Mk.II camera but looking at photos of the AC-5 it appears to have a standard DC power plug fitted, with either 2.1mm or 2.5mm centre pin - they are standard connectors on PSUs. A 5 minute search of some of the big electronic component suppliers produced the list below of power supplies that should be suitable. If you really insist on at least 5A then there is a 6A one in the list. If the connector is not the right type for the camera that it can be simply cut off and the correct one fitted, spare plugs cost 50p ish. I haven't looked on Ebay or Amazon but I would expect to find dozens of PSUs there that would be suitable. The biggest problem to date has been the connector to the camera (grip), the OM-D E-M1 Mark I had a proprietary one that made things difficult but with the Mk.II life's now simple.

9V power supplies:
4.45A - https://uk.farnell.com/mean-well/gst...45a/dp/2815904
4.5A - https://uk.farnell.com/xp-power/akm4...-9v/dp/2890823
4.5A - https://uk.farnell.com/xp-power/akm4...-9v/dp/2890822
6A - https://uk.farnell.com/mean-well/gst...-6a/dp/2815912
4A - https://uk.farnell.com/xp-power/akm3...-4a/dp/2839529
4A - https://cpc.farnell.com/ideal-power/...m%2Fw%2Fsearch
4A - https://www.rapidonline.com/ideal-po...output-18-1684

Edit: A bit more digging and I found that the connector plug is a standard 2.5mm one.

I notice that some of the supplies you listed are rated at 50w, even though the rated output is less than 5A, so I guess that they have reserve in hand for short term demands. Like you, I doubt very much whether any of these cameras need anything like 5A continuous output.

Many thanks

Looks like Ablegrid might have made one https://www.ebay.co.uk/i/15352576790...RoCB5IQAvD_BwE Or do they make the 'Oly' ones?

The last thing you need to check is the polarity of the connection. It's pretty much standard that the centre pin of the power plug is +ve and the sleeve is -ve but I have seen some equipment wired the other way round. Just a point to be wary of before applying power.

If anyone has a genuine AC-5 could they have a look to see what the polarity is? There will be a small diagram on the underside showing which is +ve and which is -ve.

The power rating is simply the current multiplied by the voltage. Where the quoted power is less than the product of the two then, yes, take the lower power value as the continuous rated value.

The centre is +ve as per my write up. To verify, see the diagram on the HLD-9 itself.

The price, 11, looks good but the postage, 39, does not I'll see if there's another source of this unit.

I kept checking until I had to go out, but could only find US sources.

Re: AC-5 power supply for HLD-9 grip

The part I specified in my write-up is no longer on Amazon. ExPro offer a similar part (https://www.amazon.co.uk/Ex-Pro%C2%A...dp/B0051GLXUO/) that is claimed to be 5A. It may, however, be only 4.5A as was the other exPro unit I tried.

Park Cameras reduced the AC-5 to 108 today, and I just bought their last one. With my Ravpower mains battery pack (that only cost me 40) that should give me at least the equivalent of 11 Oly batteries at 11 each when away from charging facilities.

I've got a specific birding trip in mind for use of these, with a couple of days of intensive shooting where there's no electricity.
