Re: The biggest working steam engine in britain

1:00 is steam time Alf and only once a day so you need to time your visit.
Gosh 10 boilers Otto they missed that fact in the pre steam chat, or maybe I missed it.

Derek, are you able to tell me what song it is. My late Dad sang "the Engineers Song" just once to me. He would never repeat it...…..Its quite risqué I think....

Round and round it went are the only words I remember...…...

Re: The biggest working steam engine in britain

Google the key phrases and you will find it.

It was one of the key songs in the bar for student engineers (which we all were)

I got that info from the poster print I bought at the museum and which now hangs on my bathroom wall. Well, it seems appropriate given it's a steam engine! The poster also says the engine is capable of going from full speed forwards to full speed reverse in "two seconds flat", quite an engineering feat.

I should have mentioned last time how good your photos are Phill, certainly better than those on the museum's web site!

If BIG steam engines are your thing don't miss Kempton Steam Museum, another claimant for the world's largest steam engines. That place is awesome!

Re: The biggest working steam engine in britain

Thanks Otto you are too kind but having looked at their website I do see what you mean and I agree with you
Just looked at that link you posted too, it looks like a great place. Long way for me though. Wish I'd known about it when I was working as I used to travel to Farnborough a lot and could easily have made a few detours. Will definitely put it on my to do list though .

Re: The biggest working steam engine in britain

There are a few places worth seeing that are a bit closer to your home Phill, such as Papplewick, Claymills and Mill Meece Pumping Stations and Ellenroad Mill, this latter is in steam this weekend and claims to be the world's biggest working mill engine .

Re: The biggest working steam engine in britain

I remember as a lad being taken by my dad to see a big pumping station in West Yorkshire back in the late 1950s.

He was an engineer and loved this stuff.

Just been watching a few of the Avalon pumping station videos thanks to the links Otto provided. These machines made such a difference to peoples lives.

Re: The biggest working steam engine in britain

Sir Joseph Bazalgette's Crossness Pumping Station is a great visit:

http://www.crossness.org.uk/

It's been called 'The Cathedral in the Marsh'. The decorative ironwork is amazing. It's a beam pumping engine and AIRC the beam weighs 78 tons. There are four engines, but only one of them is restored.

Re: The biggest working steam engine in britain

Yes, Crossness is incredible. The main engine house has been closed recently after asbestos was discovered, I think it's open again now but it would be worth checking before travelling. Make sure you've got a good sat-nav too as it's in a veritable maze and we found getting out was a bit like Hotel California!

There's also Kew Bridge Engines which has recently been reborn as an "experience" called the London Museum of Water and Steam. I'm not sure I approve of that but the core is still there and the massive Cornish beam engines are well worth a look.
