Falconry Day

I'm probably first home and know that Ian is going to set up a proper thread for this, perhaps he will move this post as required.

We had a brilliant day, Andy and the Fen Falconry were excellent and the day was enjoyable, instructive and frustrating. My hit ratio was pathetic but I am most grateful to all concerned in organising it.

My bravest photo was to try to take a picture of the Olympians, five pictures actually, this is the one with the least strange poses. It would be nice to attach name to faces.

Re: Falconry Day (move to permanent thread)

well, what a great day!

So I must say a huge thank you for those that arranged and hosted the day. Having had a quick look at the images that I nabbed, without doubt they are my best efforts with BIF, all due to the tuition provided by Andy and helped along by the sun! I will try to get some images posted tomorrow evening.

It was great to put faces to names and meet some members of this forum too!

(for the record I am second from left. wearing a green and black hooped polo shirt )

Re: Falconry Day (move to permanent thread)

Had a great day on the Watercress Line Steam Gala today (Hampshire), I did photograph some trains but had a great peoples day photographing Staempunks. Pity the weather was so nice with their hats made it difficult. Would have loved to do this event but had promised to meet others here in Hampshire. Perhaps I can organise a similar event in Hampshire at the Hawk Conservancy.

Re: Falconry Day (move to permanent thread)

After about a dozen shots I was very surprised to discover my first keeper so early!

I have now created a gallery category for 'Fens Falconry, 9th March 2014' under 'Events' - if you could use this category when uploading your shots from the day I would appreciate it

And to share on the forum by all means use this thread - more to come!

Re: Falconry Day (move to permanent thread)

Many thanks to Andy Elliot and the team - it was a fantastic day, I really enjoyed myself.

Just about to have a look through the many pix taken and then off to get a well earned rest.

Will process tomorrow.

The only downside today was misplacing the 75-300 lens cap

Again my thanks to all and the many members of e-group.

Regards. Barr1e

Re: Falconry Day (move to permanent thread)

Again an excellent day and thanks to Andy, Ian and Falconry staff for all the hard work they put in. Some frustration, surprisingly with the slower birds, but much learnt and more work to do. Busy deleting now and will post something later.

Re: Falconry Day (move to permanent thread)

Thanks, all! I'm regretting falling on my ar$e - rather sore in the body region now... Bah! Hopefully Barry's lens cap will turn up.

I had a great time and thanks again for being such a tame and well-behaved audience!

Andy

That's a great shot Ian hope this puts a marker as what is to come. Be really interested to hear how folk got on with the 50-200SWD lens.

Really Glad the weather was on your side and hoping to learn a lot from folks experiences of this great opportunity hopefully to be repeated?

John

Ps can't wait for the pics to be uploaded to the gallery.

That is very nice. Just shows how important catchlights are to any portrait.

Re: Falconry Day

I think I may well spend the rest of the day on the naughty step as the pix I am about to post do not incorporate much of the information imparted by our excellent tutor Andy. Many thanks and sorry Sir.

I did start the day with most of the recommended settings, etc., in place and did have some limited success. However, I will take the info forward and practise hard!

Very many thanks, also, to Mike, Chris and Ross for their friendly hospitality.

So far as the first posting on this thread is concerned, I doubt anyone would have trouble working out which one is me, even if we didn't manage to get into conversation!

1. My, what big hands you have -

2. Ooh look, a daisy! (This pose reminds me somewhat of Orville, if you are old enough to remember him!) -

3. It's all mine, mine, mine! (The expression says it all!) -

All taken with the OM-D, E-M1, 2 and 3 with the 75-300mm lens, the first with a 45mm.

Regards,
Ann1e

Re: Falconry Day

Yes, going through one's shots on screen is a humbling experience!

As others have said, I likewise have an extremely low rate of just-about keepers from BIF, but loads of really nice stationary and ground shots that I'm mostly yet to go through. I also took about 1200 shots, mainly with the Panasonic 100-300 for BIF.

I knew I was getting a low rate of in-frame and in-focus images, but I stuck with it in the hope I'd improve: I did, but it was a damn slow process! I suspect I'd have done better with the 40-150.

I used the Oly 75 f1.8 and the Panasonic 12-35 for closer shots and portraits, and both were clearly ideal - the 75 especially since you didn't have to get too close to perched birds, and the bokeh is magical.

A few examples:

Re: Falconry Day (move to permanent thread)

I really had a good day too. Enthusiastic first class tuition from Andy and excellent hospitality from the passionate and dedicated team at the Fens Falconry Centre. The order for the weather was spot on too. It was great to put faces to so many names on the forum shame my remaining few grey cells were having trouble remembering them all. Maybe at one of these meets we will get organised enough to make some name badges. I really feel I've learnt a lot not sure I was able to put much into practise though. Ian that's a stunning shot and I'll forgive you getting such a good shot so early as you let me borrow some lenses. Not sure my wife will though if it translates into more glass requests. Anyway now as this was my first time shooting raw I need to go and figure out how to look at my many blurry shots
Hope everyone got home safe and thanks to all for making this a superb day.
