Transit of Mercury 2019 - a few photos

I took some photos of the transit of Mercury today when some gaps in the clouds appeared here in Bedfordshire.

Em1Mk2 + 300mmF4 and MC-20 (when I remembered I had it!). I used a home made solar filter which I removed for the last image with the sun low near the horizon.

Did anyone else manage to get some shots of this?

Quite impressive. I am intrigued by the recipe for the home-made solar filter.

I got some Baader safety film (it looks like thin silver foil) and it came with instructions for making the filter. It is essentially 2 rings of cardboard which fit snuggly round the end of the lens hood with the film being held in place inside the outer cardboard. Instructions for this came with the film, it was a bit fiddly and I used a lot of sellotape. There is a better way I would use next time which is to sandwich the film between 2 flat rings keeping it flat and attach that to a ring that fits the hood, or get a screw in filter. I had this film laying around so this was a last minute thing!

Here is a not so great phone pic of the filter on the lens

Brilliant work both in the images and the DIY. I did get a reminder about it but wouldn't have had any means to view it to hand even if it had stopped raining!

Re: Transit of Mercury 2019 - a few photos

Super photos Bill. I wish I had known of the transit, I could have tried a few photos.

Yes Baader film is what is needed for the sun. I have made up my own filter using Baadar film attached to a clear filter...it fits my Pany100-400mm. My best photo using it was a transit by the International Space Station, I showed it here a couple of years ago...
