More adders...

I was contacted recently via Flickr by a chap who wondered if I could show him some adders when he came up to my local area on holiday. He turned out to be an Australian ecologist and something of a snake expert, the European adder being one of the species that he's never yet managed to see. So no pressure on me to deliver then!

Luckily despite the day being overcast and showery, this time the adders were obliging (sorry Greg!) and we found five within 200 yards of parking the car. Out came the Canon 6D with triple flashguns, leaving me feeling just slightly inadequate holding my little EM1 and 60mm macro.

When he asked whether I minded if he picked one up to examine it more closely, I started mentally calculating the distance to the nearest casualty department. But I needn't have worried - he was incredibly skilful (and importantly for me, very aware of the adder's welfare throughout.) I suppose being brought up in Australia he learnt his handling skills on some of the most venomous snakes in the world - he did comment that adders did seem to be pretty docile.

The upshot was that I managed to get some of my best photos so far of adders. The 60mm allowed me to stay far enough back to be outside the strike range (about 12-15"), although my Aussie friend had no qualms about getting really close up:

I haven't yet seen his shots, but I was pretty pleased with how mine turned out:

All taken with OMD-EM1 and 60mm macro at ISO 200

Brilliant serious - lovely colours, and great detail in the adders themselves.

Re: More adders...

Some fantastic images, and I'm very jealous of you both being able to get so close. I've never seen an adder in this country, only in the Austrian Alps. Obviously at the time I didn't have a camera with me, so I've never got a picture myself. I'm not sure I'd get that close though, not without a lot of training in snake handling!

David, thank you for sharing, I particulary like your fourth image. An interesting story too, photography does often lead to these little moments.

Re: More adders...

Rather you (and him) than me - I'd want at least a 300mm lens!

But great pictures!

Re: More adders...

Thanks for your comments everyone.

Alf: His diffusers were simply sheets of polystyrene foam slotted onto stiff plastic held onto the flashguns by rubber bands. Unfortunately I can't yet say how effective they were, but once he's posted his photos on Flickr hopefully he might let me link to them to show the end results.

Ed: One of the good things about Ireland is being able to walk your dog without having to worry about whether it'll find an adder before you do. Over the years I've had two dogs bitten on the nose. Happily neither were fatal, but I do have friends who have lost dogs to adder bites. For me it's a constant worry during the summer months, and very much limits whereabouts I walk them.

Re: More adders...

One of my dogs had a narrow shave last summer but I was able to stop him in time. It's the only adder I have seen in the wild and I did have the EM5 to hand so got a couple of pix, but nothing like yours.

Re: More adders...

Great shots and a very nice mossy and pink setting.

I guess the advantage of a 6D and three flashes is that it's nice and big to hide behind!
