Which pic to win a prize?

All of them? (that's a joke )

Or none of them? (please be brutally frank - I can take it....I think )

The theme is Street Photography, for the 1st round of Amateur Photographer of the Year competition. Should I go with.....

Up close and personal

Tension

Or moody lighting

Comments and advice much appreciated.

Last one, the three girls walking.
Did you get a sequence, maybe with the car gone?

Unfortunately no, Ulfric, "Delroy" was parked all the time I was there.

Re: Which pic to win a prize?

Number 3, but cropped even tighter. I like the eye contact of the guy with the banner.

Re: Which pic to win a prize?

Hi there zuiko!

It would have to be one of the last two, but which I can't decide. I'll have another look later on a better monitor and if I can make a further decision I'll post again.

Cheers,

Ralph.

Re: Which pic to win a prize?

#1 is lacking something to give it that edge. It needs a bit of contrast in the context - maybe someone sleeping rough in a doorway

#3 (the mono) does not do it for me - everyone seems a bit disinterested (even the protestors)

#4 is good. How did you manage to catch so many young girls in one go? Even though we don't know what they are doing (and they probably are not all together) it does give it a theme.

#2 is the one for me though as it has a social message about the right to protest being upheld by the establishment ('cos I can't see a linked line of bobbies, horses, or drawn truncheons).

The third picture, John. The facial expressions on the two main subjects speak volumes.

No3 speaks the loudest to me John.
I wish the protestor had been looking at the policeman rather than at the photographer though.

Re: Which pic to win a prize?

Definitely number three for me. I like the eye contact between the protester and the photographer and it is stronger for being mono. This works as street but if there is a photo journalism section it would also work there.

Re: Which pic to win a prize?

There will be tough competition. Photographers will be out there getting into other people faces. You need to have lots of perceived emotion. Full-on eye contact. Facial expressions. Only number 3 can be considered.

Street photography is tough for some people to do. But the fact that is is a competition changes everything. Go out, Be bold. This is the empowerment you need.
I took part in a photo scavenger hunt once. On the day each team is given a list of 40 subjects and a deadline. We had team members in handcuffs with policemen. Blonde in a red coat. Strangers and local traders getting to the spirit and posing for us. I was forced to go way out of my comfort zone. But having a piece of paper in my hand, and a genuine story. and that deadline, it was easy... after the third stranger any way. This is where the DSLR mirror-huggers are at a disadvantage with their big pro, commercial, stealing-my-soul, fleet street money grabber cameras. "It's OK folks. He's only got one of them there little, whatsit? micro-four-thirds cameras!"

#3 is the best, but unfortunately you've chopped the placard.
