Bittern & Little Egret

Had a second visit to Titchwell and nailed some other stuff I didn't get first time around :

The bittern is a little cluttered, but you can't choose where she will sit for photos unfortunately - I'm just glad to get seeing and photographing one

Re: Bittern & Little Egret

That's a great Bittern shot Danny. Shows the bird in it's natural habitat which makes a better picture IMHO. In winter when the reeds are brown their camouflage is so good they're almost impossible to spot.

Titchwell's a great place isn't it.

Regards.

It is indeed Peter - I'm going home Friday after being in Docking for 2 weeks, and Titchwell is 7mins away by car, so I went twice, knocks socks off Pensthorpe which is too commercialised for my liking. Also did Welney WWt as its only 20mins from my inlaws in Downham Market, but again, its very sanitised, and everything is WAY far away from the hides (which are really good hides btw).

I agree with you about Pensthorpe, too much like a zoo.
The time to visit Welney is in the winter when the Ouse Washes are flooded and the water comes right up to (sometimes into) the hides. There are thousands of migratory Hooper and Bewick's Swans, ducks and waders, it's a spectacular sight.

Regards.

Re: Bittern & Little Egret

Excellent shots as usual, Danny. The Bittern is depicted just as it should be - shy and skulking in the reed bed.
Titchwell is one of my favourite reserves and I visit it several times a year, I can get there in less than 2 hours so if I have a free day it's my first thought.

Re: Bittern & Little Egret

Excellent shots of two great birds Danny. It is always exciting if you are lucky enough to spot a Bittern and this one looks superb amongst the reeds. Titchwell is a wonderful place but it is about an hour-and-a-half's drive for me, despite living in Norfolk, so I go there only a couple of times a year. I am glad you enjoyed your taste of some of the delights of the county.

Ron

Re: Bittern & Little Egret

Thanks everyone for the feedback! We've just arrived home off the overnight ferry from Birkenhead, I'm sad to leave my local barn owl behind Had a great time in north Norflok, so we're heading back next year for some more
