Exclamation Safer Computing: 30/09/2016

B U L L E T I N (ID: HKRI-AEAE6D)

Anyone whoís used the internet knows that when you click a link on a web page, one of two things may happen. The link may load right there in your current tab or window, or it may open in a new one.

Websites that donít want you to leave, like Facebook and Twitter, tend to opt for the latter. Since most people generally donít want to lose their place on their social media feeds, this functionality has come to be expected.
However, this minor convenience comes with a glaring security hole.

When a user clicks a link and it automatically opens in a new tab or window, that newly-opened page has some access to the source page that the user clicked from. That access is limited, but itís enough to force the original page to load an entirely different website.

So imagine you click a link on Facebook and it opens in a new page. You look at that page for a few minutes, then close it and go back to your Facebook tab. Oddly, Facebook says youíve logged out, and presents you with a login page.

It seems strange, but youíve had Facebook open in this tab all day, and donít have much reason to be suspicious.

You enter your login credentials, and youíve just been phished. The page youíve logged onto isnít Facebook, but rogue website. Itís a slightly more sophisticated version of the email phishing scams everyone knows to avoid. ďClick this link to claim your cash prize,Ē etc.

Or just don't have a Facebook account to begin with like me ;-) is the best defence.......
Call me old fashioned forums are as far as I go.
Facebook and other social media platforms are easy pickings for the fraudsters not to mention the actual sites storing everything u have said/done on the site basically mapping out your whole life on some server somewhere forever.

OK, I'll call you 'old fashioned'.
I'll use FB, but in a limited controlled way, although I do fall for the Bored Panda & other sites it finds for me at times (even BBC News ). I got into it to keep in touch with my greater family & also to get onto other sites like Olympus FB to be able to comment etc.

Re: Safer Computing: 30/09/2016

And still some people on this website open a post with just a link to a website, no explanation to what the link is about or anything. Members will then be used to having to open a link to find out what the hell the poster is on about. Next a random member will use this to send you to who knows were. I have comented before about lazy people posting with just a link before, but they still do.
