High key mono of Lara

This was a really flat image in colour so I decided to wack up the contrast and adjust the tone for a very high contrast result.

Re: High key mono of Lara

I'm always surprised how some dull colour photos accept greater contrast tweaking and can become great black&whites, while tweaking them in colour doesn't achieve anything...
This is a nice example.

Um! Ian ... is "wack" a new function on the E-5 I don't know about ?

Lara is a very pretty girl with "passion" in her eyes and face, which you have captured here so well!

Nah - she's just laughing at her camera-obsessed daft dad!

Re: High key mono of Lara

Great image and I hope she's pleased with the result of camera obsessed dad's work. Comments always seem to be rather unnecessary for what is a lovely shot of your daughter, so any comment will deliberately treat it as if you were photographing someone else!

Critique comments would possibly be linked to placement on the page, and I'm not sure what my preference would be! So I would say these more as a general comment until I saw any comparative shots.

If she had been looking slightly to one side, then I would have possibly had the face to one side of the landscape alignment, so that she was looking across to a blank space, but with a straight on look it is perhaps a bit less obvious which way to go. However, because of the tilt of the head, I'd be tempted to try a placement on the LHS of the overall image.
Otherwise, the other approach would be to have her face in a portrait format, but in many ways I rather like the landscape format!

But all in all, a nice simple and attractive image, capturing her eyes probably far better than if it had been left in colour.

Regards
Chris

The eyes are striking, but maybe a bit too much for me. They're almost scary, which I'm sure can't be the effect you aimed for.

"The eyes have it" I think i would be very very pleased if i had taken this photo, one is drawn immediately to the young lady's eyes. Very striking. ATB martin

Re: High key mono of Lara

Thanks everyone - I have posted this on all three of our sites and the majority of feedback is positive, but a few have been a bit freaked-out by Lara's eyes!

And a couple think the mono high key treatment is too harsh, but they are in a minority. I'm personally very content with it the way it is but I do value the comments even from those who suggest changes.

Re: High key mono of Lara

I wonder how it would look if you were to apply a slight soft filter, just to take the edge off the stunning clarity. I'd also love to see the colour version, just to see its origins.

Re: High key mono of Lara

Ian,

My comments are based on the overall effect which you have achieved with this photo of your daughter. I assume that it was not a posed picture but quite spontaneous and natural. In that respect it is very effective because the wisp of hair in the corner of the mouth, the drops of water on the face, the ears in focus and the smile, teeth and bright eyes all in sharp focus with strong contrast has produced a picture which I guarantee you will treasure always. In my opinion a lovely study of a beautiful young girl.

Ray.

Yes - this was really a holiday snap (using an over-qualified camera and lens - E-5 + 50-200 SWD )

Re: High key mono of Lara

I actually prefer the original, as it looks far more natural to my eye.

I used to enjoy taking photos of our daughter, but she has grown increasingly camera shy of late; I think because she knows I enjoy taking her photos! However, she doesn't seem to mind other people, including her big brother taking her picture, probably because she knows it will annoy me!
