Very harsh C-net review for 620

Hi,

Many people look to C-net for reviews, people could be misled. I thought it was sloppy writing. On the other Canon/Nikon reviews they find faults, but do not use such negative wording.

For example: Nikon D5000 http://reviews.cnet.com/digital-came...-33623155.html
"But ultimately I find the flip-down version on the D5000 less useful than the flip-out versions on Olympus' SLRs: it's good for overhead and hip-level shooting, but not as comfortable for sideways. Of course, from that perspective it's far more flexible than Canon's fixed LCDs. But the D5000's LCD isn't very good. In addition to the aforementioned visibility problem in direct sunlight, it just seemed soft; I couldn't tell if my photos were sharp, and manual focus in Live View (and video recording) was nearly impossible."

Quite a score there for Olympus. Why "Steer clear".

Example 2: Canon EOS Rebel T1i:http://reviews.cnet.com/digital-came...-33567129.html
"It lacks common perks Sony, Pentax, and Olympus include in their cameras, like in-body mechanical stabilization and a wireless flash controller in the body, a feature I occasionally find quite useful. The inclusion of an image-stabilizing kit lens doesn't quite compensate, since additional optically stabilized lenses tend to cost more in the long run."

Quite a score there for Olympus. Why "Steer clear".

I thought their conclusions were a bit harsh. "Steer clear" after saying "The E-620's photo quality is probably its strongest suit". Absolutely nothing about size advantages, quality of kit lenses, best-in-class dust reduction etc.

I can't really make a user review as I don't have one (yet), but perhaps some owners would wish to invest time in posting their own reviews. When browsing reviews on sites, I do take into account real user comments if they seem balanced.

If I were Olympus, I'd be livid over the words "steer clear" for this camera!

DavidJ.

Re: Very harsh C-net review for 620

Why would Olympus be concerned by biased reporting, when they produce a product that can make an image such as this...

This was taken with the E-620 and the 300mm and I was a long way from the chap with the 90-250.

I don't read reviews any more, I make up my own mind. I used the best Nikon kit you can buy when I was at work, but chose Olympus for my system. It works for me, weighs less, costs less and is every bit as good as anything else for what I want to use it for.

Hi Graham

The simple answer is they have to because people who are thinking of buying cameras DO read these reviews. I agree that it's a harsh summary from what is actually quite a strage review in many ways as it seems to be arguing that this is an overcomplicated P&S camera???.

We should respond if we can because otherwise bad publicity can be self fulfilling and we all want to see Olympus sucessful so they keep giving us excellent kit to used don't we.

I would encourage everyone who has one (I don't yet) to put a positive user review on the web site, and as there wasn't a link to the article in the original post here it is

Re: Very harsh C-net review for 620

Bought one this week, and is quite simply marvellous. I have played with a Nikon D90 and that is great. I have owned a Canon 450D and that was superb, but I stuck with Oly not because of the reviews; it was becuase of the great experience and results I was getting.

I attended a course a few years ago for novices, and while everyone struggled to get to grips with their new DSLR I found the Oly very straight forward especially because of the super control panel.

The Lenses too are great.

I agree with Andy that people will read these reviews and come to the wrong conclusions. Luckily there are other reviews like Mick Cookson (Digital SLR User July 2009) which sing at least this models praises.

Re: Very harsh C-net review for 620

I've submitted my review (as dt1000) and would encourage others to do the same.
I reckon these biased reviews will do Olympus no good at all and feel the balance must be redressed.

BTW In writing biased reviews, CNet (and certain others) will probably damage their own reputation in the end;
so they'll likely change their attitude.
