Need to buy a zoom lens..

hi everyone...

I recently traveled somewhere locally here in Pakistan and saw the snow for the first time in my life...live-snow that is, have seen glaciers previously but no live snow - and it was fun.

I had taken my EPL5 with me during the trip but I figured that the zoom of kit-lens is too less so I couldn't take pictures of objects/scenes far-away. I'm now planning to buy a lens which has a long zoom but am not sure which one to buy.

Keeping in mind that I also took a lot of photos while the vehicle was on the road - so a faster lens will be required.

One more thing, I don't think EPL5 is weather protected. So, in such cases where its raining, snowing or there is too much of dust - what should I do? Because I was using my camera very cautiously. If the camera was weather-proof I could have used it more.

Re: Need to buy a zoom lens..

The kit zoom, (40-150) is 300mm equivalent at the long end, the only other one would be the 75-300mm, that is equivalent to 600mm on the long end, you have to be pretty steady for that one.

You don't need a faster lens you need a faster shutter speed. Around 1/500 should do the trick. If it is un-achievable, turn up the ISO.

The camera can get wet, but, like you I am careful about just how hard it's raining IF I dare take it out. I had mine out at an airshow in the rain, not a down pour, briefly, and it is OK.

Re: Need to buy a zoom lens..

When I google, I get the following results for 40-150. Which one should I be looking at...

1. Olympus 40-150mm f/2.8
2. Olympus Digital Zuiko 40-150mm f/4-5.6

As pvasc says. Take a look at the Panasonic 45-200 and 100-300. The former may be a compromise for what you seek.

why panasonic and not olympus? any specific reason for that because I think I'll be able to get olympus lenses here locally where as for panasonic I'll have to get them imported which would cost high...

Re: Need to buy a zoom lens..

Panasonic make good lenses and they cover slightly different focal lengths to those made by Oly.

For your purpose the second lens will be adequate. It's light, small, will be well-balanced on your Pen, and 1/10 the price of the other.

Yes I forgot about those. You should be able to find the 45-200mm used at a reasonable price, and I think it has a stabilizer built in. Panasonic lenses, some, have O.I.S. because their cameras don't.

Re: Need to buy a zoom lens..

That would be down to you. They are totally different focal lengths. You can't assess everything on price! It depends what you need to use the lens for.

I'm not really sure which one would be better for me. I've tired googling it but it isn't of much help.

Re: Need to buy a zoom lens..

Google does not know what you want to take photos of. But looking at what you said before I would get the 40-150. The other would be too long a range.

Re: Need to buy a zoom lens..

The Olympus 75-300mm is a nice lens, just at f4.8-f6.7 it tends to be a bit slow. I use mine for bird photography and simply up the ISO to get a fast enough shutter speed, for birds in flight that's 1/1600 or faster for me. It works well on the EPL5. The Panasonic 45-200mm is faster and so I use lower ISO to get the shutter speed, at the cost of magnification of course. The 40-150 f4.0-f5.6 is a nice lens too but at the cost of even less magnification.
