First attempt at jazz gig!

Dave O'Higgins - tenor sax

Rick Spence - bass

Andy Youell - drums

This is my first attempt at low-light photography with the new E-30. The gig was organised by my friend Rick at the Imperial Hotel in Stroud. I took a flashgun but decided it was inappropriate, so I had to manage with the light that was there - basically some ceiling-mounted spotlights. The room has black walls and a gold ceiling!

Dave spent most of the time with a light just behind him! The other players were slightly better lit. Sadly I didn't get one decent shot of the guitarist.

I was working at F2 with the 50mm macro, at 3200 ISO - shutter speeds about 1/25 second so pretty near the limits. The shots weren't outrageously noisy but look a lot better after a gentle massage with Noise Ninja.

It was fun but I'm sure I could do better another time...

Yes dark jazz clubs are not the easiest of places to get good results, I should know having done a few shoots at Ronnie Scotts. I think you made the right decision, to have just put up the ISO & deal with the noise in PP.

Re: First attempt at jazz gig!

Yes well done.I much prefer these sort of pictures without flash, sort of gives it that "Jazz club" look.

Very good musician Dave o Higgins.

I like Jazz quartets a lot.
