Re: Your other hobby/ies....

Wow John - the epic Gibson Les Paul... as used by Mr Steve Hackett on many a Genesis album. I had the pleasure of interviewing Steve Hackett a few years ago and spoke to him about his sublime guitar playing on the excellent live version of Carpet Crawlers (Suppers Ready, recorded live in Paris 1976) that many agree is better than the studio version - he said that was played on the Les Paul.

I think another excellent world class guitar player has also used the Les Paul in his time - Mr Gordon Giltrap. Do you remember Heartsong which was the theme tune to the BBC's Holiday Show on TV in the late 70's and was hosted by Cliff Mitchelmore. Gordon wrote that song, which received global recognition, and is a world renowned guitarist of many génres - classical, electric, ambient, acoustic - the man is a genius. I have recently pulled the photographic coup of my so far very short photography career - will advise in time, but am going to see him in concert in a week or so, hoping to hear some Les Paul type sounds.

What a fantastic guitar this is, I only wish I could play guitar - despite being theMusicMan - I can only play E, A, F, C and G - and can play a few 'tunes' but that is it!! Wonderful instrument - do you have any music recorded?

Thumbs up Re: Your other hobby/ies....

Wow -

I'm so pleased you all have posted something we enjoy doing in life.

Photography has taken over mine - well almost. I still have time to give Anne a hug between being on the radio and p+p my pix. She's just wonderful with the cups of tea and sandwiches. I'm not surprised she doesn't have time to adjust her own pix. The greatest thing never a word of complaint.
Even out in the field after giving me instructions on composition she doesn't complain that she's missed the shot.

My only complaint if you call it one is I can't have the E-3 at the moment coupled with a Maserati and other items too numerous to mention.

Ah well - back to my pictures of the Castle at Berkhamsted I took today.

Life's tough eh!

Regards. Barr1e

Here's mine, supporting (transporting) No1 son (in the red) around the county for 8 months of the year, still he is quite good (duty bound to add that bit) plus various eve training sessions, between this and photography I really don't have much time for anything else but work Thank goodness for hobbies!

Re: Your other hobby/ies....

Hi John,

Steve Hackett, an excellent player and yes I think sublime is a great way to describe his playing. That`s fantastic that you met him.

My LP is a 2000 build standard. I fell in love with the Les Paul sound many moons ago, but they are horrifically expensive! It was the distinctive sounds from Jimmy Page of Led Zeppelin, Jeff Beck, and in particular Mick Ronson who played with David Bowie that really made them appeal. Joe Walsh also springs to mind. Amazing really these guitars have stood the test of time as their design is largely unchanged in over 50 years.

You mention Gordon Giltrap. What a genius. Heartsong I remember well that is a fantastic piece of acoustic guitar playing, he really is a guitar player of exceptional note. That should be a great concert, enjoy. Will you be taking pics?

I dont have any music recorded, but there is some out there somewhere from earlier days as I did get involved with a few bands. Nowadays I wait for my dear wife and daughters to vacate the house then out comes the Gibson, the 30 watt Roland amp and some carefully chosen backing tracks!

Well John you listed 5 chords you can play which is 2 more than a lot of other guitarists can manage, and some of those made millions! I recently have been experimenting a bit more with 7ths and minors. The LP cleaned up has a lovely even perfect jazzy sound and to play is nothing short of delightful.

Right all we need is a bass player, a drummer, some sexy female backing singers....and hit the road as the E-system band!!

regards

John
