MZ 300mm - 4/3 Rumours Update

Update on the new MZ 300mm lens, Source: 43rumors.com: http://www.43rumors.com/digicameinfo...e-300mm-zuiko/

Olympus considers to make the new 300mm f/4 PRO lens with OIS, to complement IBIS in Olympus bodies (which is less effective at really long focal lengths) and also be attractive for Panasonic users.

Lens construction is 17 elements in 10 groups, 2 SuperED elements, internal focusing.

Other sources told me the lens will ship in early Spring 2016
.

Interesting, if accurate.

well the panny GX8 uses OIS and IBIS together so maybe Olympus are doing the same... how 'steady' is this going to be?

They should offer a non IS version for tripod users. It should make it cheaper and sturdier.

Re: MZ 300mm - 4/3 Rumours Update

I see the rumoured price is between 1799 and 1999 euros. That is 1292 and 1435, which is not quite as much as I expected but still well out of my price range, especially after the cost of the teleconverter is included.

Re: MZ 300mm - 4/3 Rumours Update

After playing with the 4/3 300mm I found I am a zoom convert even with the m4/3 TC in my kit already I think this is one lens I will give a miss.

Re: MZ 300mm - 4/3 Rumours Update

It's a pity they didn't make a m4/3 f4.0 version of the excellent 4/3 90-250 f2.8 lens, that is a cracker lens although big and heavy.

Re: MZ 300mm - 4/3 Rumours Update

While agreeing with you Paul, there may be good reasons why they don't. Including:

- maybe it didn't sell very well
- maybe the design would have to be radically altered to suit contrast detect AF

With big long lenses, the size advantage of micro-4/3 over "big" 4/3 is much less and a 90-250/2.8 will be a big heavy beast anyway. If you have a body that will support PDAF (i.e. the E-M1) then you can use it with an adapter. Slowing it down to f/4 to save size, weight and cost strikes me as not being very worthwhile - the 40-150 with 1.4x converter is roughly 56-210 at f/4 and it would be a big effort just to get an extra 40mm at the long end.

Still, we can dream

John

Re: MZ 300mm - 4/3 Rumours Update

Having used Ian's rental 4/3 300 f 2.8 lens with a 1.4 TC - I'm quite looking forward to getting something similar for the m4/3 but with it being f4 to start with the TC will drop this another stop, so it'd be a 420 f5.6 or thereabouts.

The 50-150 with 1.4 TC is such a good lens my expectations are quite high for this if it ever appears!

Re: MZ 300mm - 4/3 Rumours Update

It's not going to be a lot different to the 50-200+EC14 which is my current long lens. I've owned the 300/2.8 and 90-250/2.8 both of which are stunning lenses. Unfortunately I couldn't afford the Sherpa needed to carry them around! 300/4 is attractive but I mainly use zooms and I doubt if it will find a place in my bag.

If this rumour is correct the lens has inbuilt IS, a first for Olympus, I wonder why they are doing that when all the Oly cameras have ISIS already?

But if it's labeled 'PRO' it's got to be expensive to convince the gullible.

It has been said (by Simon) that the IS is good up to 6 EV steps. Having a dedicated OIS has got to be better than generic IBIS, but also allows this lens to be used on other M4/3's bodies (Panasonic). Also, Olympus filed a patent for Dual IS where the body only corrects for rotational movement, something that OIS would not be able to do. I hope that can be possible with the E-M1 (with another FW update) but maybe not, although I would be surprised if not.

Re: MZ 300mm - 4/3 Rumours Update

Don't see why it's a given that lens-based OIS has to be better than IBIS... certainly Nikon and Canon claim that, but then, they would, wouldn't they? The optical path and the sensor in the body are both relevant and it seems to me that, given smart enough algorithms and accurate enough motion detection, either system should be capable of delivering excellent results - which is what users observe, I guess.

I read somewhere on here that the OIS had been added to the lens to attract more Panasonic m43 users to buy it and thus increase sales volumes. Of course, the higher price and "redundant" OIS may deter some Olympus body owners...
