Isn't it strange...

Hedychium gardenerianum (Ginger-Kahili Lily) flowered for the first time in my greenhouse this year. The flower spike is about 20 cm across, extremely beautiful as you can see, highly scented and reasonably long lived and yet...

Google it and you find that it is classified as one of "The World's 100 Worst Invasive Alien Species" by the IUCN Invasive Species Specialist Group. Truly a weed is a plant growing in the wrong place and that isn't my greenhouse!

Gus

By the way, the blueish/purple flower creeping in at the top is Tibouchina semidecandra.

We have Alchemilla mollis growing like a weed in the garden. If you google it you'll find lots of advice on how to cultivate it, but nothing on how to get rid of it! It's a real nuisance.

Sorry, but the best way is never to plant it in the first place!! The next is to cut off all the flowers as soon as you see them - they aren't worth having and it seeds profusely. I don't actually know how long the seed remains viable but how about a flame-thrower on the seedlings or napalm (safety warning-there might be a bit of collateral damage)

It's certainly strange - I've never seen one before, but very beautiful indeed. Thanks for showing, Gus.

Thanks.

We inherited it with the house 15 years ago. Despite my best efforts, it's still prospering. I've considered the flame thrower approach, but was vetoed...

Nice shot btw.

Blimey!

Are you sure it's not this?
