Is this too much?

I took this snap today...I rather liked it, then did a bit of PP on it...

What do you think? Should I stick to the original or go with the edited version? I'm thinking of getting this printed on a small canvas for his first birthday as a present for my son, his daddy...

He's an amazing little performer...he starts grinning as soon as I point the camera at him...he goes into fits of giggles if I use flash!

I think I need to do some work on the lighting as the edited version seems rather underexposed but I'd be interested to hear your opinions.

He makes a simply super subject, but it's very hard to be objective when you're a new nana!

Re: Is this too much?

The original one (top) Janet, in the edited image the skin tones have gone a cold sickly colour to my eye.

By the way a great portrait of a lovely child Janet, I'd stick with the top one with just a little additional pp.

Top one. Just nice.

What are you aiming for with the greyish processing? If its something sensible maybe we'll all click and agree with you ...

I love the "life" in the yellow one.

Re: Is this too much?

I wasn't really aiming for anything...just clicked on a setting and rather liked the result...I found the yellow just a tad too bright...

Still, I think I agree with you, and I'll get the first one printed, once I've cleaned up his nose a little!

Thanks for all your comments.

Janet

Re: Is this too much?

The original shot is a lovely portrait and I've been trying to think what it could be that you feel needs changing. Maybe you wanted a more subdued mood to the picture and the yellow was the problem? The answer might be a full B&W conversion and I've taken the liberty of having a go, but I still like your original!

Re: Is this too much?

John,

I love that edit...I wasn't too sure about the graininess, but my son's just looked at it and said "wow....!"

I don't really know what I think needed changing...I just wanted to try and lift it from being just a snapshot.

I think my problem is that I take so many photos of him...it's hard to pick out the best, but I really need to find a good one for his first birthday.

Janet, I would describe your original as a well composed portrait rather than just a snapshot. You could do far, far worse than pick this one.

Re: Is this too much?

I agree with Zuiko, your shot is really very good, and you have the best elements of child portraiture, frame the face with colour to bring out the skin tone, and lovely sharp eyes. Just a tiny retouch needed in editing.

Re: Is this too much?

Hi Janet,

Its number one for me as well. No 2 doesn't look nice at all considering it's a cracking photo.

Not sure what you use for processing your images but if it is Photoshop then help is at hand. You can add a Hue/Saturation Adjustment layer. Then in the Dialogue box click where it says Master this will give a drop down menu listing all the colours, select Yellow then select the Target Colour Adjust Tool just to the left. The icon looks like a Hand with a left/right arrow either side, the cursor changes to an Eyedropper icon click on the Yellow colour in the image whilst left clicking the mouse then drag the mouse to the left to Desaturate or Right to increase Saturation, and there you have it. It's a very underused Tool in the Photoshop workflow to play with the colours in images.

Hope this helps you.

Tom

Thanks Tom...

I'm really not very good with Photoshop, so that's a real help!

Re: Is this too much?

Well I was not going to but as a few have posted edits of it here is my version, I think it is a cracking photo you have taken and deserves printing Janet.
