Cool The new Four Thirds User Knowledge Base Wiki is open for business!

Over at our siblling site, Four Thirds User (FTU) over the last three weeks we have bee busily constructing a brand new FTU Wiki to replace the old one that fell into disrepair. The aim of the Four Thirds User Knowledge Base Wiki is to become THE knowledge base for Four Thirds and Micro Four Thirds information.

You can find it here:

http://fourthirds-user.com/wiki/Main_Page

The new wiki already has well over 100 pages of content and we hope it will grow steadily. And I very much hope that some of you will join the small band of volunteers who have helped in the creation of the new wiki - after all that is what wikis are all about; we welcome editorial contributions from anyone interested in Four Thirds and Micro Four Thirds

Unfortunately, because there are plenty of unscrupulous people out there that seem intent on spamming the wiki, we currently have to manually add new accounts that provide access to editing privileges. I do hope that many of you will be keen enough to allow us to set up accounts for you, so if you are, please email (via forum PM or via admin@fourthirds-user.com).

The world of wikis may well be brand new to you - but don't let that put you off; I will be posting hints and tips here to help you get used to how wikis work and so we can work together to make the FTU Wiki a great resource for everybody with our common interest

Ian

Re: The new Four Thirds User Knowledge Base Wiki is open for business!

Yesterday in a period of just 2 hours there were 50 registrations on the new FTU Wiki. Alas - every single once was a spammer registering to post completely irrelevant dross. It took much of the morning to block all the spam accounts and delete their pages.

This is why at the moment we have to manually register people - sorry about that! It's also why we need more volunteers to help keep any eye on the wiki when we return to self-registration mode in the new future. I am in the process of installing additional extensions to filter out spam registrations but even so we will need volunteers to keep an eye on things round the clock.

We also need volunteers to help add new content to the Knowledge Base - if you are interested - please let me know!

New pages added can now be found here:

Re: The new Four Thirds User Knowledge Base Wiki is open for business!

At least have a look around or spread the word

I realise it's too big a step for many to devote the time to learn how to edit a wiki, but they are easy to read

Please have a look at:

http://fourthirds-user.com/wiki

..and let us know if you spot any mistakes or omissions that we can put right.

And we're always interested in hearing about suggestions for additional pages or other improvements - if you are interested in a prospective change then it's more than likely that others will share your interest.

Re: The new Four Thirds User Knowledge Base Wiki is open for business!

After influx of spammers the other day we have now enabled a human user check in the registration process. It should filter out robots and some human users who know nothing about Four Thirds.

But to be frank, we don't know how effective the filter will be so we will have to keep any eye on:

http://fourthirds-user.com/wiki/Special:RecentChanges

Spammers generally create an account and then post text that is nothing to do with the topic of the site, usually with links to irrelevant or malicious third party sites.

If you have an account on the wiki, please feel free to use your judgment to block suspicious accounts and delete any pages that contain spam text. Even if you make a mistake, any actions are reversible and you won't be taken to task (unless you do it too much! ) (Actually you need to be an admin to block accounts - my apologies)

Otherwise, please send me a PM on the forum or email admin@fourthirds-user.com and we will sort things out.

Thanks in advance!

Ian

Re: The new Four Thirds User Knowledge Base Wiki is open for business!

It looks like a great start Ian.

BTW, I think you meant the flashes to start 10 years later in 2013?

I think Ian got the right date, but instead of flash he meant "time travel machines".
