Gotcha - Catch of the day? What a picture, what a picture ...

... Um-tiddly-um-pum-um-pum-pum
Stick it in your fam'ly album -

We took a bus ride out and a lovely walk back along the canal. The day started with clear blue skies which clouded over when we were half way back but it was still pleasant and we had a very enjoyable day.

When we were almost home, we happened upon a couple of young lads on the opposite bank and while we were looking to photograph a couple of swans heard their cries of glee as they began to bring their catch to shore -

1.

They landed the largest carp I have seen taken from the canal, although we spoke to a few more mature anglers on our way back who assured us carp can be anything up to 80 lbs and they reckoned this one was around the 10 lbs mark. It looks heavier than that to me but I am no expert on fish! -

2.

In this age of instant technology the boys ensured the catch was captured for posterity -

3.

They did not hold the fish for long and very carefully placed it back in the water -

4.

All taken with the OM-D, 70-300mm.

Regards,
Ann1e

Carp may grow much bigger, but that is still a splendid catch and a magnificent fish. Glad to hear that the lads acted reponsibly over the fish's welfare and returned it to the water unharmed. It was great that you were at the right spot at the right time.

Well recorded, annie, the carp looks in prime condition and will probably give other fishermen as great a thrill in the future. Good to see the care taken.

A story well spotted and shot with your usual crisp lens, Annie. What is so good about these is that the lads appear to be quite unaware that they are being photographed. And after capturing it for posterity the best thing they could have done was what they did in returning it to the water as in Oz these fish were introduced by European migrants who regard them as edible. Tasmanian Inland Fisheries have gone to great lengths in trying to eradicate them but with little success. Carp play havoc with our native species.

What a catch Ann1e!

Another of your beautifuly illustrated "Tales from The Canal". I think you should consider a Photobook with that title.

Thanks for sharing.

Gosh Ann1e, I was horrified when I saw this fish!
As Mark has said, this is an introduced species into our rivers and much despised. They muddy the waters and eat native fish and in SA heavy fines are imposed if you return them to the rivers after catching them. Some people eat them, but they are full of bones and have a muddy flavor.

Re: Gotcha - Catch of the day? What a picture, what a picture ...

I thought I was pretty lucky to bring in a 4 1/2 lb Flathead out of Lake Macquarie years ago, but this is one little monster. Maybe we should ask these guys to come to Australia to have a go at catching all our carp, but not putting them back, just supplying the cat food companies instead.

I confess we do have a few carp in a a fish pond.

Nicely taken Annie.

Unbelievable John! Perhaps we are missing something here - we should be sending and selling all our European carp to you! .
I am wondering if our introduced carp are the same as yours? I know the carp Ross has in his pond would be a different carp to the ones in our rivers.

I hope!

Very many thanks John (Zuiko), Chevvy, Imageryone, Mark, John (heatingman), Peter, Lyn and Ross, for looking in and for your kind comments.

It was great to see a couple of lads enjoying themselves away from a computer! Their actions were a credit to their generation which is often much maligned.

Regards,
Ann1e

Sorry Ann1e - we are "carping" on!
John - that is SO ugly! Yuk.
We turn them into garden fertiliser in Aus. - best thing for them I think!
Thanks for showing. I will stick to our elegant King George Whiting, Barramundi and Snapper.
