Lower Oddington St Nicholas

E-3 11-22

North wall of the nave has one of the largest surviving wall paintings - alas now rather indistinct, it would originally have been brightly painted.

Detail shot from painting known as 'The Magnifigence' dated to 1520, just to the west of the pulpit

Must admit I found it difficult to locate intelligible detail shots - this was taken with the 50-200.

Well the pulpit is 17'th century, whilst the pews are from the 19'th. I would suspect that in the 17'th century the church was arranged with box pews or benches in a rectangle facing the pulpit, a lot of churches abandoned the East/West orientation around this time - only to have it re-instated when practises again changed in the 19'th century.

Nick, what superb shots you present for us ! I must find out where this little church is, it is amazing and a real shame they have not repainted the the paintings to preserve them, I hope they do.

Thanks for sharing ... I am off to find the location of this gem of a small church !

I think an archeologist or conserver would have a fainting fit at the suggestion they re-paint the paintings to preserve them, though it would be glorious to see them reproduced somewhere.

The church is just a few miles to the East of Stow on the Wold.

Should have said - it was Ian (Rawcoll) who suggested I should take a look at this church - thanks Ian
