Photos from France

Starting off with the Mer de Glace glacier at Chamonix:

This is a not very good six vertical frame pano stitch, but the view is amazing. The glacier has dropped in height by hundreds of metres since the end of the 19th century and tens of metres in just the last few years. The glacier used to be at the level that this photo was taken. Notice small holes in the side of the glacier - that's where tunnels into the glacier have been dug in the past and there is a new one cut so visitors can experience being inside a real glacier most of the year around.

Inside the glacier - yes that's moi - taken by Elizabeth.

Lara and Elizabeth posing as the lighting changes colour.

More to come...

Julia says - Everest, here I come!

The descent into the Mer de Glace gorge on foot is actually quite challenging and takes around half an hour. In the background is the easy way down! (Which we elected to take on the way back!)

Re: Photos from France

How about giant 100m+ sand dunes near Bordeaux?

The easy way to the top.

And:

The hard way up!

We got to the top and then the heavens opened and we were soaked to the skin!

Re: Photos from France

Remember those places well, I used to work near Arcachon so Pyla was a good day out for me.

The Mer de Glace looks a bit "Mer de Mud and Rock" at the moment!

Re: Photos from France

Not been to the sea that far South but have been to the Mer de Glace.
I felt it was spoilt by the commerciality of it. Not least the St. Bernard dog in the ice tunnel for the 'benefit' of posing.
You obviously had a bit of an overcast day. Not quite dreich. We had two days of hill fog and then....

6 shot hand held pano on an Oly C-8080. Les Drus in the centre and the Grande Jorasses in the distance at the head of the Mer de Glace.

Funny, In Chamonix I discovered I like water rather than ice in the foreground of my pictures and the fewer people the better. In other words my home turf.

As regards the dunes, how do you build a concrete stair on shifting sand?

No mud, the distance makes it look like that but it's rocks of all sizes. Obviously, in winter the whole glacier is covered in a thick layer of snow.

So THAT'S what it looks like at the top Too cloudy for us!

I don't think the stairway is on concrete... but I'm no expert! The steps are fibreglass attached to what looks like scaffolding!
