Hmm ... maybe Apple isn't as bad as they say?

Just downloaded from my Galaxy phone, surreptitiously across the aisle without interrupting her train of thought.

Melbourne to Wangaratta XPT, a 3 hour trip - onboard entertainments, a laptop and an XZ1.

Nice shot, its interesting and portrays life for many.

Shes tethered with headphones and looks absorbed in the computer too. Bag on the seat shows what I would refer to as a generational issue of "space". Living in urban areas, tightly packed and the like its a passive defensive measure. And surrounded by familiar objects, perhaps as social crutches to offer further protection.

Its one of those days

Yes, a very defensive position. Not very interested in the "Scenic Tour"!

More scenic for me were I fifty years younger. I can now view such subjects with a kind of detached curiosity without undue distraction.

I'm surprised that Lyn hasn't poked her head in here ... she's an Apple fan. Maybe I've been a bit too hard on her? ...

Re: Hmm ... maybe Apple isn't as bad as they say?

Placing the symbol on the laptops lid and illuminating it from the screen light was/is a stroke of genius, when the Apple Product Placement guys get the device in films and TV programs it immediately gives out a "here I am message"

Ditto when you go into Business Class lounges at airports you see the bright glow of the symbol dotted around the room.

Re: Hmm ... maybe Apple isn't as bad as they say?

I see an aside about Apple customer service ....

I have an oldish Macbook which I purchased a couple of years ago, second-hand and cheap, to run iTunes which did not sit happily on my PC alongside Adobe products. I use iTunes to sync my iPad and iPods.

Now, I'm no particular fan or enemy of Apple, it's just that in this instance it was the right tool for the job.

However, a month ago the Macbook (3 years old) developed a couple of hairline cracks on the screen casing near the hinges. I took the machine, in a moment of boredom, into the local Apple store to see a "Genius". To my surprise he decided that the cracks shouldn't have occurred, and told me to leave the machine with them. A few days later I got a phone call. My Macbook was ready for collection. They had replaced the complete screen assembly, free of charge, with no argument.

Maybe this is why some people swear by Apple products?

PS I will still stick to PC for my main machine!

Re: Hmm ... maybe Apple isn't as bad as they say?

I was doing software development on an Apple Lisa just under 30 years ago. There were a marvellous machine and well ahead of their time. The UI of Apple's products is still class leading and they have always been a force in the publishing world. In spite of all this I am not an apple fan as I hate the "lock in" forced on the users and completely detest the synching model of iTunes. Whilst I'm ranting on about this I also hate the synching model of Windows 8 mobile. Give me windows mobile 5 and 6 and a staight forward copy of files from one machine to another. I shall continue to use this outdated technology as long as I can.

Re: Hmm ... maybe Apple isn't as bad as they say?

John, Derek, Stephen - I need my tongue cutting out for what I am about to say and Lyn will be wearing a triumphant smile for the rest of the week if not longer.

Firstly, Derek you are right, indeed the Apple logo design was a stroke of genius in the first place and, like Canon's white lenses, the marketing has been and still is utterly brilliant.

And Stephen, for what Apple charges for its products, not to mention the goodwill they got for replacing your screen, the cost to Apple would have been less than peanuts. That said, I have to add that I regret not having adopted Apple all those years ago when I bought my first PC instead - I must reluctantly admit that it was a bad mistake.

When smartphones appeared on the market and Lyn bought an iPad, I bought a GalaxyS2 which I have come to regret, in spite of my zealous support in this forum over a year ago. Since then I have found the Samsung GalaxyS2 evermore unstable. Home page Shortcut Icons have a nasty habit of relocating themselves, the phone makes undialled embarrassing calls to my contacts, texting is difficult and trying to reply to forum threads is a nightmare. The Galaxy's saving grace is its Google Navigation app, it is phenomenally accurate.

My next phone or tablet may well be a Blackberry. Obama has one so they gotta be good!

Re: Hmm ... maybe Apple isn't as bad as they say?

You're correct about the financial cost to Apple for the repair. Retail they would have charged me £180. But the goodwill they have/may have bought is priceless. They may not have bought me, but they've changed my opinion about them, and gained some free advertising in the process.
