I still love the E-system though and am working hard to afford to get an E-3 again, but for the time being the D700 is earnings its keep
Perfectly reasonable. I would no more recommend an E-3 for low light high ISO work than I would a D700 for holiday snaps. You need the right tools for the job.

For yiourself, maybe a successor to the E-3 would be worth the wait

Well high iso lets you get the speed/exposure in less than good light, so it is natural to want the best possible results.

The alternative is to buy very expensive (and bulky) fast glass, but with fast lenses costing several times more than a camera body - well the emphasis on 'solving' this in-camera is understandable.

Mind you, ten years ago, we would have just shrugged on a dull day and built model trains (or something).

Chris, I'm assuming the D700 is the same, but I found that the live view zoom for critical focus is low resolution. Despite the super high resolution D300 screen, there is more detail in the E-3 screen for critical focus. That was certainly a surprise.

I Also couldn't find a way to display the shooting information in the main LCD, so I had to peer over the top of the camera to check shutter speed, aperture, ISO, EV bias, etc.

Not used the D700 for any live view, but will have a play with it over the next couple of days

I'll bet you that you won't be able to work out how to use live view unless you resort to the manual
