Hunting Barn Owl (v3.0 firmware)

On Friday evening I went out to see if I could find any Barn Owls to put the new version 3.0 firmware for my E-M1 II to the test. After a short wait a couple of owls appeared and put on a good display for me.

I got the impression that C-AF was working better than before. It latched onto the bird quickly and seemed to choose the subject instead of the fussy backgrounds for most of the time. I am quite pleased with the results anyway and most of the failures were down to my failure to keep up with the action.

The final shots of the owl with its prey are not too good as they are heavy crops but I had to have some shots of it with its reward for all that effort.

All taken with the E-M1 II, 300mm f4 and MC-14.

Ron

Re: Hunting Barn Owl (v3.0 firmware)

Many thanks for the nice comments Phill and Andrew. I don't think I will be going down the MC-20 route. I have enough trouble keeping the targets on the bird at 420mm. I don't think I could cope with 600mm. It would be okay if I was shooting stationary birds, using a tripod but I don't do that these days.

I suspect it's more to do with Ron V1.0 - great shots!

Re: Hunting Barn Owl (v3.0 firmware)

Many thanks for your encouraging comments and 'likes'.

Does anyone know what the unfortunate prey is? It looks quite large for a Field Vole but perhaps that is an optical illusion due to Barn Owls being smaller than I think they are. I hope it is not a Water Vole as they are spending a huge amount of time and effort providing suitable habitat for them on the reserve. They refer to it as a Water Vole Mitigation Scheme for some reason.

Ron
