Nice to see the locks are being maintained.

I always think that canals are deeper than that, especially at the sides.

In the UK generally only at the locks. Remember nearly all of them were dug by hand!
Dutch ones tend to take much bigger traffic so are usually in a completely different league, but the width here wouldn't be enough for most of the smaller barges I've seen over there.

Re: Who Pulled the Plug?

There is always an end to a story.

Lock Gates Replaced and they look big, bold and beefy.

Olympus E-M1X coupled with 40-150 lens + 1.4 converter - A.mode - f7.1 - ev -0.7 - iso 200 etc

Re: Who Pulled the Plug?

I've always admired the way lock gates are held in place by a geometric lock by water pressure.

Looks good. I am surprised they are not painted, though. I wonder if the wood is given a different treatment nowadays.

Re: Who Pulled the Plug?

Normally the balance beams would be painted black and white but the main gate panels are not usually painted. They are usually made of oak I think, though metal gates are used occasionally.

I'm also surprised they are not painted, they look unfinished. Maybe they'll return to do this later.

I think that they're made of oak, which doesn't need treatment.

Re: Who Pulled the Plug?

Thanks all for looking in and commenting - the video below answers most questions and is more informative than the earlier one I posted, runs for 10 minutes.

Nice to see the new gates in position and everything back to as it should be.

Re: Who Pulled the Plug?

Thanks Barr1e. Having spent many hours applying my backside to the things and only seeing the bits that stick up out of the water, that's really interesting.

Re: Who Pulled the Plug?

A time lapse of the water level droppig and then of it filliing up would be an amusing interlude.

Many decades ago I did a time lapse cine of a boat going through a lock on the River Neckar.
Fortunately for you all the technology jump from 8mm movie to a MP4 or equivalent is a step to far at the moment.
