Windows Hell

OK, hands up, how many folk here have installed Windows on their computers at home ?

My lad has a fairly new laptop with Vista Ultimate installed on it. He bought a larger hard drive and asked if I could update it to Windows 8 ..... I am still fighting the beastie.

First off, I had a copy of Windows 8 upgrade from a few years back when it was first released and copies were being sold for about £30 to encourage takeup of the new system. I tried it, for a day or two but did not like it so went back to Vista again.

Anyway, I tried, oh how I tried, to upgrade from Vista Ultimate to no avail. I gave up after three attempts and five hours. Searching the great WWW suggested that I could not upgrade from Vista Ultimate to Windows 8 Pro, so it was back to the drawing board.

I reformatted the hard drive ( only 3 hours) and loaded up Windows 7 Home Premium - and tried again. Yes, the upgrade started, then there was a restart, then it said 'Loading. This may take a while.'. You are telling me. After 3 hours it had reached 43% so I gave up and went to bed. It was done by the morning but I have no idea how long it took.

Next job - upgrade it to Windows 8.1. Try this and you find you have to download 183 updates amounting to 1.23 Gigabytes !! So, a couple of hours later it had managed to download the lot and install them. Next came a restart ...

... and it all fell over and decided to 'uninstall' all the updates, plus the downloaded files, and return you to the welcome page again.

So, try again. I download all the updates again, although they have now increased to 185 files, and install them again. Another few hours lost. But hey, computers are a source of fun aren't they ??

Whether it will work this time I have not a clue - I will update things later. The main idea behind all this is the lad wants to try the new 'FREE' Windows 10 .... can I scream now ?

Re: Windows Hell

How can it be a new laptop if it has Vista (discontinued 6 years ago)?

Re: Windows Hell

I now only ever do clean installs. Upgrades are always problematical.

Biggest problem is drivers...

and this is why I LOVE my Mac
You do have my sympathies, Windows used to drive me up the wall too. Thankfully that is a distant memory having converted many moons ago.

Kind regards, Simon

I only use 'Fischer Price Windoze 7' on a machine I have Photoshop installed. My real machine runs Xubuntu. I have to grit my teeth when I need to edit images on the W7 machine!

To those who asked, it was 'new' to him when he got it last year.

Anyway, update is - it installed all the updates on second try, then fell over again upon restarting ths system.

Plan B is to go back to Windows 7, which seems reasonable to use.

Windows 8 ? You can keep it.

Re: Windows Hell

You do not have to have Windows 8 on to eventually update to Windows 10, it will update from Windows 7. The big question is such an elderly computer compatible with Windows 10, it may well not be. When you get the white Windows icon in your toolbar click on this to open it and you should see a button in the top left corner in the white bar. Click on this and look down the list that opens and you will see there is a 'check your PC'. Click on this and it will run a check and tell you if your computer is compatible. Even if it says no this can change as Microsoft check more and more drivers etc. My ancient laptop which is of a similar age originally got a not compatible but when I checked again a week or so later now says I can.

Windows 8 (and 8.1) is much maligned but mostly unfairly I feel. I think this is one example because Windows 8 was never designed for the kind of hardware that was originally run on Windows Vista.

Re: Windows Hell

My lappy came with Win7 when Win8 was released so I got a free win8.
Had dramas with lappy and formated the hard drive (twice) and the lappy fires up it was using the original Win7 again

And the reason for the format; it was the b&^%$ LR slow running/crashing drama I found out later . The amount of time wasted there; and some files/edits

I have been fiddling with the small MacAir lately but cannot make the BIG switch even though so many says its better. My daughter is 400ks away now so I don't have anyone close to help when needed. My keyboard doesn't work with mac and I need cables to use the monitor.
We never seem to stop spending $$ with photography these day

Re: Windows Hell

I have an NEC that came with Vista. It was super buggy. Then microsoft offered that Win8 upgrade. I downloaded it and was using it. Then Win 8.1 was offered free. Upgrade.

Problem starts when like Dewi9. I changed a HDD to a bigger unit. That was early 2014. I manage to find the Win 8.0 Upgrade offer Email. In it was the link to the download. Then came the shock...over 200 updates and that did not include the upgrade to 8.1 which had another 100+ updates. In all, I wasted 1 whole week updating just because I needed a new HDD.

As an advice, Add the rams to the MAX your laptop can support. Then Update the HDD without anything installed. Do a safe recovery when the updates are completed. Back that into an external drive. Store it away for use in a rainny day.

Have lots of patience.

Re: Windows Hell

My last laptop came with Win7 32bit (Pro), plus 8GB RAM had been installed (& wasted with 32 bit) but to use Capture One I needed to go to 64 bit. I bought the Win 8.0 upgrade & didn't know how (originally) to make it install 64 bit over the 32 bit but eventually worked it out. I resisted the upgrade for 8.1 until one day it seemed to start it by itself & so I let it continue, much to my pain because it appeared to work until I restated it & then it kept coming up with the Blue Screen of Death. Thankfully I could start Windows in Safe Mode & was able to copy all my files & then put them onto a new laptop (HP) that came installed with Win 7 (Pro) but with discs for both Win 7 & Win 8.0 & so I've stuck with Win 7 & feel so much more comfortable. The stupid Mail in Win 8 was painful as I like to use the Windows Live Mail 2011 which handles multiple email accounts. At this point I don't intend to go for Win 10 until everything is so tried & tested & still I may not because I prefer the more manual control I have in Win 7 without having to sign into a Microsoft account & before you Mac users start gloating, old Macs just get slower as you update the OS because it becomes hardware hungry & Macs are so limiting when it comes to interconnectivity. The iPad is enough for me in that regard.

OK, I've had my whinge now.
