Colors of Guadeloupe: Blue

Hi all

As mentioned in earlier post I had the intention to share some of my pictures from my visits to the island of Guadeloupe in the French West Indies.

First some intro narrative.

Actually Guadeloupe is a groups of islands of which 7 are inhabited. Most people live on one of the large two islands named Grande-Terre ("great land") or Basse-Terre ("lower land"). The names are somewhat misleading, Basse Terre is the highest of the islands with a volcanic peak exceeding 1500 m in height and with a large lush tropical forest, today a national park . Low the sense "low in relation to the wind" (leeward). Despite its name, Grande-Terre is smaller than Basse-Terre Island. It was named in opposite to the much smaller Petite Terre Islands ("Small Land" Islands), two tiny islands about 10 km south-east of the Grande-Terre. In addition to these islands are La Désirade, Marie-Galante and Les Saintes.

Guadeloupe is a cool place. It belongs to France and obeys the French jurisdiction, with a certain degree of local regulations to adapt to local conditions and way of living. 80% of the population are afro-americans, 10% or so are ethnic europeans (mostly French), a few percent are of Asian origin (Idian and Malaysian kulies, Syrians, Lebenase) and the rest are mixed. Take French Culture with Boulangeries, Cafés, well stocked Supermarkets, Peugeot, Citroën, Renault and mix it with large portion of Western Africa and add some Asian touch and you end up with a terrific mix called the Creole culture. People speak French and many also speak Creole (a mix of African languages brought by the slaves, blended with French with simplified spelling). English is surprisingly widely spoken by French standards, as long as you stick to the areas frequented by tourists.

People are really nice and relaxed, life is easy going, climate is gorgeous. In spite of relatively dense urbanization (mostly around Pointre-a-Pitre on Grande-Terre), are found unspoilt and attractive areas, a dramatic and contrast rich shore line, superb beaches, coral reefs, mangrove swamps, rain forests, waterfalls... I'll stop here for now, if you are curious and want to know more I will try to answer your questions or try to direct you where to find the answer.

My idea is to shares pictures on a color theme basis.

Today's color is Blue.

Thanks for looking,
Tord

Blues O.K. even if it's the colour of "the Enemy" (football)

Pointe Des Chateaux for me - wow what light and great sky.

The set as a whole certainly imparts a sense of tranquility,Tord.

The colour blue itself is the colour of peacefulness.

I enjoyed these Tordan - sounds like a really interesting place.
I love the shot of the locals on the pier - and your previous shots of the humming bird were just fantastic - but this one - words fail me!
Just superb.
