Warning Don't Bank with Bank of Scotland

After my issues a few weeks ago with my BoS credit card being the subject of a 4.5k fraud they've now cocked up my online bank accounts due to their 'systems upgrade'. This now requires them to call you if they suspect a transaction. Problem is despite getting my cellphone number wrong and me correcting it, then them subsequently sending a text to the correct number to say I had changed contact details (!) they subsequently got the number incorrect again with the same wrong number. When I corrected it again they then informed me that my internet banking would be suspended for 7 days whilst they checked this number. This was done on Monday and my daughter is getting married on Saturday. I had already called them last week to inform them I would be making larger and more transactions this week. I now cannot make any. I went into my branch and spoke to a manager who cannot do anything as it is 'the system'. I now need to go to the branch and draw out cash to pay wedding suppliers as they cannot process electronic transactions to other than BoS accounts at the counter. I cannot transfer money from my internet savings account to my current account to draw on funds. Luckily I get paid tomorrow.
I am moving to Nationwide asap.

My experience with Nationwide last year was negative, resulting in my closing both accounts I had with them. A different scenario, but also with the effect of them refusing me access to money I had deposited with them. I was not at all happy.

Eeee, that makes your blood boil, Jamie, eh? It's their mistake but they put a freeze on your account when you really need it more than usual.

I'd be moving as well - none of them are great, but at least you're letting them know that they're not getting to do business with your money any more - good on you, and I hope you go through with closing your accounts with them.

Re: Warning Don't Bank with Bank of Scotland

I fully sympathise with you over this cock-up, but if I were to cease banking with any bank which had got things wrong with me at some point, I wouldn't have a bank account anywhere.

My wife and I between us have worked for ALL the major UK banks and a few minor ones, and during that time have had staff accounts with them all. Each one has made mistakes. S**t happens.

FWIW I'm with HBOS (AKA Lloyds Banking Group), and they are neither bad nor good. They are a bank. Staffed by humans. Some of whom are bad, some of whom are good.

I am with the Co-Op bank...no real problems and can easily get cash or put in deposits at the Post Office

That sounds pretty poor. If they couldn't sort it out there & then I'd have demanded all my funds in cash over the counter and closed the accounts to open new ones with their biggest rival. Not that they'd necessarily be any better but it would have made me feel better. Hope you get it sorted out and the wedding goes well.

Re: Warning Don't Bank with Bank of Scotland

Just a quick update on this. I spent the last week before my daughter's wedding running round paying the various service providers (celebrant/caterers/band/venue/restaurant) in cash as I could not use my card with any guarantee it would be accepted. At times I had nearly 3000 in my pocket. I had to explain to the above providers the reason for paying cash and every one of them had a BoS story re cockups - including one exactly the same as mine with a credit card fraud followed by an account lock out. On Friday I had a call from a woman in the Halifax complaints division. She profusely apologised and said she'd credit my account with 150 for 'the inconvenience caused'. I told her it didn't matter as I was still moving my business. Nonetheless 150 appeared in my account today.

Re: Warning Don't Bank with Bank of Scotland

A few years back I joined a long queue at a Halifax branch to pay my Halifax credit card balance of around 35.00 with cash.

When I arrived at the counter the clerk said I couldn't pay it there!?

"No, no.... you don't understand" I said "it's a HALIFAX credit card bill, not some other bank's!"

"Sorry, we're not a clearing bank, you'll have to go elsewhere......"

Lost for words.......

Re: Warning Don't Bank with Bank of Scotland

If you want a bank staffed by people, named people you can talk to, who can do something about it when you call them with a problem, I can recommend Weatherbys in Wellingborough. If the account goes overdrawn, they write to me to say they assume I will have already got money coming in to fix it, and apologise for troubling me. If I set up a new DD, they ring me to check it's kosher.

They aren't a clearing bank, they don't have branches, but they do issue cheque books and Visa debit cards, they do have online banking, and they are a breath of fresh air.

And you don't have to be a racehorse owner (although if you are, you certainly know Weatherbys).
