Olympus XZ-1 compact may be of interest to Pen fans

Olympus has revealed the fine details behind the compact that was previewed at Photokina. It's called the XZ-1 and you can read more about it here:

http://dpnow.com/7693.html

I've had a play with one and have a white paper if you have any questions to ask

Re: Olympus XZ-1 compact may be of interest to Pen fans

About time! Olympus used to produce some fantastic compacts in film days. And it's not the first compact to bear a Zuiko lens, only the first digital compact. My 35RC had a rather fine 42mm f2.8.

I like the look of this new camera, particularly the large control ring situated around the lens - far better for me than fiddly little dials and wheels. The lens range is perfect for general use photography and I don't doubt that this will be a high quality optic. If only it had a 4/3 sensor, even if it made it a little bigger! Even so, it promises to be a viable high quality compact for ultimate portability when high ISO (above 400) is not required.

Santa, you missed me this year, how about next Christmas? (Although if it's first come, first served with the orders I'd rather have an E-5!)

Re: Olympus XZ-1 compact may be of interest to Pen fans

Sounds exciting, especially as you can use the VF-2. I now refuse to use a screen-only camera as I find it too awkward with specs. I agree it would be even better were it to have a 4/3 sensor.

Ian - is there a noticeable shutter lag as with most/all compacts?

Re: Olympus XZ-1 compact may be of interest to Pen fans

Well looking at the first look 'reviews' (http://www.pocket-lint.com/review/52...camera-review) (http://www.dpreview.com/previews/olympusxz1/) this promises to be a useful compact camera to have close-to-hand at all times, with the fantastic benefit of being able to use the E-system wireless flashes.

I always find a use for a compact camera either as a backup to the main E camera or to take to places that I would not want to have a large camera in. On some trips I will take just the E-30 with the 70-300mm lens and my compact camera as a back up for any landscape type photos. And having tested a friend's Panasonic GF-1 I found the size of the micro four thirds system lens compromised the principle of a compact shooter that I was interested in.

The potential of this new camera gives me the hope that I won't be limited to Nikon P7000 or Canon G-12 for a top end compact, and the inevitable extra accessories that one would have to get.
Add to this the possibility of taking a quality compact Oly plus my FL-36R flashgun out and about might almost get me rather enthusiastic! The specs look good, bar perhaps the direct USB charging of the battery. In fact I think I want one now Santa!
So Ian, I for one will be interested to see how your test, plus other reviewers, react to this new camera. Any chance of one to test for the Newcastle meet in May? Well done Oly.

Regards
Chris

Re: Olympus XZ-1 compact may be of interest to Pen fans

A few more links for those interested as more 'first look' reviews get published to webpages today.

http://www.steves-digicams.com/camer...-1-review.html (didn't notice initially that this had a few pages of the review)

http://www.letsgodigital.org/en/27924/olympus-xz1/

http://www.olympusamerica.com/cpg_se...&page=overview

http://www.olympus-europa.com/consum...ifications.htm

http://www.imaging-resource.com/PRODS/XZ1/XZ1A.HTM

I add this one as it's good to see a few 'other camera' users seeing the possibilities with the XZ-1
http://photography-on-the.net/forum/...php?p=11583362

And finally, on Amazon UK at 399 in near future
Amazon Amazon

Nice. I use my Canon G9 in tandem with my E-P1 so for those with more money than sense an XZ-1 and a Pen would be very nice indeed

Re: Olympus XZ-1 compact may be of interest to Pen fans

The XZ-1 really does look like an exciting camera. I was already impressed by the specs that had been leaked but I am genuinely excited now it has been officially announced. What an unexpected bonus to have remote wireless flash compatibility. Looks like a cracking lens, I cannot wait to see some image samples that will hopefully confirm that Olympus has really hit form with this model.

I had been thinking about an LX-5 in the future but the XZ-1 looks a cracker.

Cheers

Chris

I can't wait, either. It is attractive because it has that little bit more than each of its competitors: ND filters (wonder if ND1000 is there?), wireless flash, fast lens. It is big, though, so I will have to handle one to see how that affects things.

Re: Olympus XZ-1 compact may be of interest to Pen fans

I didn't have enough time to sense if there was shutter lag. The OLED screen lis very nice. It has a very classy feel about it.

It's a shame it doesn't have the E-PL2's updated accessory port 2 though.

This looks really nice. Personally I would prefer this to a Pen as a way of having a more compact Oly!

Just for the record Dpreview have posted some nice image samples taken with the XZ-1. It really does look like Olympus have produced a cracking compact.

Re: Olympus XZ-1 compact may be of interest to Pen fans

Nice! Compacts are useful for parties etc., and his new one looks really interesting. My daughter has a Mju 1030 that I borrowed in Australia for snorkelling, and I have a Panasonic Lumix myself as a bathing "camera", I like to have them waterproof down to 10 meters.

Now, if they would get out the old XA design and make it digital and waterproof, I'd melt completely ;-) Mju and XA fit nicely inside a bra underneath an evening gown, an absolute "must", of course And yes, size does matter.
