Re: A worrying development

Does it mean we need to install antivirus into our cameras?

Re: A worrying development

You take the card out to read the photos? Where do you put it after that?
Perhaps you should virus check it before you put it back in?
The clever virus sits on your PC until it sees you reading a card and then it knows where to go next!

Yes, the early viruses propagated via floppy discs, an SD card is only an updated device serving the same purpose!

Re: A worrying development

Anyone remember the early Sony(?) cameras that used a 1.44MB floppy to record images on. It seemed a great idea at the time, but storage rapidly got overtaken by sensor improvements.
Still can’t understand why Apple have removed the SD slot from their laptops. It’s not like they are passing on any savings to buyers!

Re: A worrying development

I remember those Sonys, yes. I imagine Apple's removal of memory card slots is so they can make money from people having to use iCloud instead. Cynic, moi? .

Surely a virus can only spread from a card to a camera if there is some software in the camera's operating system to read and load programs from the card. But I'd imagine that the software in the camera only writes to the card, since there is no reason to read anything from it.

It must read when you view the images on the camera, Shirley.

Re: A worrying development

Yes, it must read the card, but not execute programs from it. I suppose it might be possible to exploit a buffer overflow or something though......

If you can't deal with it by scanning you PC why would scanning the card help?

I would have thought the camera reads from the card every time you switch the camera on in order to recognise the card exists, and verify it's size and integrity. Also, possibly if the camera is used to format the card.

Could that be the cause of my camera glitch?
