Hedgehogs mating (please don't open if you will be offended)

My prime interest is natural history and I find photography fits in well. So when I find something which is relatively rare or not commonly seen then I like to record it. So for those of us interested in such things I am posting this set of three from amongst about a dozen shots from around 11pm last night.

My son alerted me from the car when he got home to 'hedgehog's making love on the lawn'. He didn't want to disturb the shot (I'm impressed with his keen natural history thinking). So I grabbed what I could and crept to the front door. For those who haven't tried to shoot in the dark it is not simple, nor quick and is very frustrating. Luckily for us a small earthquake would not have disturbed the paring.

So whilst I shot on auto with flash using E3 and 50macro - which may explain the over clinical sharpness, Robert shot with his E500 kit lens and manual focussing. I can't post his as he is still asleep!

If you haven't seen this first hand then it is worth looking out for. Most gardens are visited by hedgehogs without us knowing. You are likely to hear it before you see it, as they are quite noisy. The male is very active biting and scrabbling for grip.

As I checked my shots I kept seeing a white flash circular highlight but could do nothing. I assumed the pictures would be useless. On the screen it was apparent that it was natural - I will not dwell... (Sorry if you have just had breakfast)

I trust our photography didn't disturb them. It didn't stop them and they didn't rush away. If they are back tonight knocking on the door I'll know we have become an integral and necessary 'part of the magic' and just set the flash off to help...

Maybe we could have a caption competition for what the female is saying in the last shot....

Nice shot Peter.

I'm glad you did not provoke a case of interruptus.

Not sure what you could have done about the grass - except by laying at full flat on the ground - to get a hedgehog eye view of the action, maybe next time.

The only joke I know about hedgehogs is................Whats the difference between a Hedgehog & a Range Rover? The pricks are usually on the inside of a Range Rover!.......SORRY!

Re: Hedgehogs mating (please don't open if you will be offended)

Thanks everyone for the comments and jokes.

I have been chatting to a good friend who is a writer and broadcaster on wildlife and he says it is quite possible that whilst the female is in season other males will be attracted to the area so I will be patrolling the garden after dusk. We will soon be on the local 'hogging' map.

I shall be looking out for 'Spikey and Punky' (with the silent S) as I now know them for a rematch. But if there are other males and disputes, threesomes and other carryings on I shall be trying out Nick's suggestion to get down low and get the hog's eye view.

I was so pleased to get anything - yesterday. But today I will be a little more ambitious and will attempt to do more with the flash off camera - if there are more comings and goings in the dark. Hope they oblige.

thanks everyone

Peter

Re: Hedgehogs mating (please don't open if you will be offended)

I waited to show these to my wife, until she had just finished her lunch, and was getting ready to sip her tea.

.... she did make faces (kind of like the female in the pictures) and reminded me that she had just eaten... and that her morning sickness might kick in off schedule by seeing these pictures.

Very nice cam-shots (sp?)

Can't let you take the blame for my evil doings! She'll just have to figure out how to hate me... and live with it.
