Honestly, do you like autofocus?

I find it hinders concentration at the critical moment when I should be in the zen state, that annoying green confirmatory light illuminating, and the camera beeping to confirm lock. I hate it actually. What about you, is it the best thing since sliced bread, or the work of the devil?

Re: Honestly, do you like autofocus?

Neither, it is just another tool which works well for some jobs and less well for others.

I'm pretty sure you can the beep off (possibly by turning all beeps off, can't remember exactly how but I always do).

Re: Honestly, do you like autofocus?

But still have the green light turned on?

(I've read quite a bit about cameras. I couldn't see the point of the MA, type 127, having no light meter, but I get it now. There's no distracting LEDs in the viewfinder dragging the eye from the important business of composition.)

Re: Honestly, do you like autofocus?

I guess there was a big enough gap between my film SLR and my EM for me to have got used to and liking autofocus. If I want to manually focus I can, but I find the results are normally better if the camera does it for me!

Horses for courses innit

If I had to use MF for nature pics, ie birds, I'd hardly get any decent shots.
For macro and things less likely to move I have allocated a button for MF which I often use.

It always depends on the circumstances at the moment of shooting.

My beep's always turned off 'cos it's just annoying.

Re: Honestly, do you like autofocus?

I switched from film (OM4Ti) to mirrorless (OM-D E-M5) because I wanted autofocus. Most of my film shots are a gnats breath off absolute focus if you look closely and I often missed the best composition on moving objects because it took me so long to manual focus. I still manual focus if the autofocus won't get a lock but I prefer not too if I can help it.

Re: Honestly, do you like autofocus?

I don't use autofocus.

I throw a black cape over my head and look at the ground glass focusing screen whilst racking the bellows in and out. When it's done I hold the tray of flash powder aloft, before firing it. If I don't use flash, I take the shot before releasing the head clamp of the subject.

I find that viewing the subject is distracting. To achieve the desired 'zen state' I either don't switch on the camera or leave the lens cap on!

I agree, the purity of the image is best preserved in the mind. That has been my excuse in the past for shooting without film in the camera!

Yep, first thing I do with any new camera, drives me up the wall to hear it.

Autofocus? Yes, love it although there are times when the old spilt screen prism (?) effect was useful. Fat lot of good for most wildlife though.

Re: Honestly, do you like autofocus?

AF on modern cameras is extremely good. Why would I not use it? The beeping is annoying though - it's one of the first things I turn off whenever I pickup a new camera.

MF is good if you want OOF shots or to let critical moments pass before you've got the camera set up.

Re: Honestly, do you like autofocus?

The green light doesn't bother me and I find the bleep reassuring.
